Sadly I look at our generation!

Lermontov M.Yu.
Lermontov M.Yu.

Phraseologism: Sadly I look at our generation!

Meaning: About contemporaries whose behavior disappoints, upsets the speaker (jokingly-iron.).

Origin: From the poem "Duma" (1838) by M. Yu. Lermontov (1814-1841): "I look sadly at our generation! // Its future is either empty or dark."

Random phraseology:

Lift the veil of secrecy.

Meaning:

Share a secret, tell something hitherto unknown, etc.

Origin:

Derived from the now obsolete expression "veil of Isis". In ancient Egypt, the goddess Isis (the wife of Osiris, "the dying and resurrecting god") was revered as the keeper of the innermost secrets of nature and the personification of her vitality. On the temple of Isis in the city of Sais there was an inscription: "I am what was, is and will be: none of the mortals lifted my veil." The expression "veil of Isis" came into use after the publication of the poem "The Closed Statue in Sais" ("Das verschleierte Bild zu Sais") by the German romantic poet Johann Friedrich Schiller. In it, the priest of the Saisi temple explains to his student that behind the veil that hides the statue of Isis, the truth itself is hidden. But no one dares to touch this veil, and only the goddess herself can do this - to reveal the truth to the world. The expression "veil of Isis" was used in the sense: a cover (veil) of mystery, hiding certain revelations, unknown truths. Accordingly, lift (raise, etc.) the "veil of Isis" - to know these truths. Gilbert Chesterton (short story "Sky Arrow"): "He's an amateur mystic," Brown responded with naive readiness. "There are a lot of them now. You know, the ones that sit in a Parisian cafe or in a cabaret and fool your head as if they had torn off the coverlet Isis or discovered the secret of Stonehenge (prehistoric stone structures of unknown purpose in England. - Comp.). For such a case, they always have some mystical explanation."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Google patents augmented reality watch 09.10.2012

The popularization of "smart" watches began quite recently, and so far there are still quite a few players in this segment of the market. However, the American corporation Google also showed interest in this industry and received a patent for the use of augmented reality technology in watches.

The search giant filed a request for a patent about a year ago, and this week it was approved by the US Trademark and Patent Office (USTPO). The document states that Google's SmartWatch is equipped with a camera, a flip-down transparent cover-screen and a built-in Wi-Fi module for connecting to wireless networks. The device works as follows: when the user flips the transparent cover, it will turn into a screen that will display information about the object at which the camera built into the watch is directed. In addition, using the gadget, the user will also be able to view notifications and use Google services.

In general, the device described in the patent is much more advanced than the smart watches from Sony or Pebble already on the market, and therefore it is interesting how exactly Google is going to implement its idea. Currently, nothing is known about any prototypes or prototypes, and therefore if the company actually decides to turn its idea into a real product, then the appearance on the shelves of Google SmartWatch stores is unlikely to happen soon.
