Count on fingers

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Count on fingers.

Meaning: A small amount of.

Origin: There were times when most of the population remained "dark", downtrodden, illiterate. There was no other way out than how to use fingers and palms as a unit of count. Accounts appeared much later. And at the beginning, an elementary count was made using a simple bending of the fingers. Well, there was a first time for everything. It’s good that our ancestors hardly had to count at least a lot ...

Random phraseology:

facade empire.

Meaning:

Showy shine.

Origin:

From French: "Un empire de facades". From the book "Russia in 1839" (publ. 1843) by the French writer Marquis Astolphe de Custine (1790-1857), who visited Russia in 1839 and, impressed by this trip, wrote a book in which he spoke about the ostentatious splendor that imperial Russia tried to cover up its internal disorder. A. I. Herzen wrote about Custine's book in his diary (1843): "He grasped best of all the artificiality that strikes at every turn, and the boasting of those elements of European life that we only have to show. There are expressions of amazing fidelity: " Un empire de facades..." This expression soon became a common characteristic of imperial Russia. For example, it was used by the writer Alexander Dumas père (1803-1862), who also visited Russia and left memories of this journey in eight volumes under the general title "From Paris to Astrakhan" ("De Paris a Astrakan"), where he wrote: "Russia is a big facade. As for what is behind it, no one is doing it. Anyone who bothers to look behind this facade is like a cat who, seeing himself for the first time in a mirror, circles around this mirror, hoping to find a cat on the other side of it.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Art originated in Africa 16.10.2002

Both anthropology and archeology originated in Europe. Perhaps that is why scientists have been looking for the origins of mankind for a long time on the European continent.

The search for human ancestors in Africa began only in the 20s of the last century and turned out to be very successful. It is now generally accepted that Homo sapiens appeared precisely in Africa, from where he settled on other continents. But for a long time there was consolation for Europeans: the most ancient examples of art were found in Europe - rock art in the caves of France and Spain, about 35 thousand years old.

Now, however, South African archaeologist Chris Henshilwood has shown that art actually originated over 70 years ago in Africa. In Blombos Cave on the ocean near Cape Town, Henshilwood and his collaborators found pieces of ocher, a red mineral used by primitive man for painting. But the main find is two stones with rather complex geometric patterns.

Of course, the realistic rock art of Europe is much more impressive, but these stones, according to various methods of physical dating, are from 70 to 80 thousand years old. This is the origin of our culture.
