Send to the dustbin of history

Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo

Phraseologism: Send to the dustbin of history.

Meaning: Throw away old ideas, views.

Origin: As the Polish philologists V. Markevich and A. Romanovsky ("Winged Words", Warsaw) suggest, the expression "dump of history" goes back to the poetic line of the French writer Victor Hugo (translated by G. Shengeli): "Days like ours are the drain of history, cesspool" (1853, from the book of poems "Retribution"). in Russia at the beginning of the 1917th century. this turn, apparently, was common for the political vocabulary of that time. Nevertheless, he (in the form of "the wastebasket of history") is usually associated with the name of one of the leaders of the October 1879 coup, Leon Trotsky (pseudonym of Lev Davidovich Bronstein, 1940-25). After the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets (October 1917, 8) was informed of the arrest of the Provisional Government, the delegates from the Mensheviks and Socialist-Revolutionaries protested against the seizure of power by the Bolsheviks behind the backs of other socialist parties and left the congress. To the applause of the rest, L. D. Trotsky declared after those who had departed: “The uprising of the masses does not need justification. To those who left here, we must say:“ You are pathetic units, you are bankrupt, your role has been played, and go from now on it should be: in the weed basket of history!" Two weeks later, he repeated his favorite expression at a meeting of the Central Executive Committee (November 1917, 27): "We are throwing into the waste basket of history all those old treaties according to which foreign territories were due to us." This turnover Opponents of the Bolsheviks also used it, for example, the Menshevik N. Valentinov wrote on October 1917, XNUMX, in the Moscow newspaper Vlast Naroda: “The janitor of history will take a mop in his hands and sweep all the evil spirits into the dustbin of history” (leading article “Courage”).

The name that was given in the Soviet film distribution (since 1965) to the film by American director Stanley Kramer (1913-2001) Heads Unbowed (1958). The author of the Russian translation is unknown.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Effect of caffeine on drug resistance 17.09.2020

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh conducted a large-scale experiment to study the effect of caffeine on drug resistance.

For a long period of time, scientists believed that drug resistance could only develop after some kind of change in the DNA. However, a recent scientific study has made it clear that this is not actually the case. It turned out that under the influence of caffeine, epigenetic changes appear in fungi. The difference between epigenetic and genetic changes is that they do not change the genetic code itself, but the so-called packaging of the DNA helix.

The study was conducted on yeast treated with caffeine. According to experts, some genes were packaged in heterochromatin, which suppresses the activity of other genetic sequences. As a result, the body's resistance to drugs was formed.
