Phraseologism: Oblomov. Oblomovism.
Meaning: Oblomov is a common noun for an inactive, lazy person, busy with idle thoughts, fruitless dreams (ironic). Oblomovism is a synonym for mental and physical laziness, a passive attitude to life.
Origin: The main character and title of the novel "Oblomov" (1859) by Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov (1812-1891). Oblomov is a landowner who leads an idle, inactive life in the city. One of the characters in the novel, Comrade Oblomov Stolz, calls his way of life "Oblomovism" (part 2, ch. 4): "This is not life," Stolz stubbornly repeated ... - This (Stoltz thought and looked for how to call this life ) ... some kind of ... Oblomovism, "he said at last." Critic and publicist D.I. Pisarev wrote that "the word Oblomovism will not die in our literature: it is composed so well, it characterizes one of the essential vices of our Russian life, that, in all likelihood, from literature it will penetrate into the language and enter into general use "(Coll.: In 4 vols. From a collection of critical articles by V. Shklovsky called "The Hamburg Account" (1928). In the preface, Shklovsky wrote that he had heard the expression "according to the Hamburg account" from a former wrestler. The wrestlers allegedly gathered in Hamburg and held a closed tournament to find out the true strength of each. But, apparently, the "Hamburg account" is Shklovsky's own expression. According to the assumption of L. I. Skvortsov ("Questions of the culture of speech", 1965, issue 6), the expression "by and large" arose from here. |

The Japanese company Canon has developed the Speedlite 470EX-AI flash with artificial intelligence, which is able to independently choose the optimal direction of light for the most uniform illumination of objects photographed by the camera.
For shooting in low light conditions, cameras use flashes - both built-in and more powerful external ones. Such devices allow you to illuminate the subject, but if you shoot the flash directly at the subject, it will turn out to be too bright in the photo, and the background will be dark and with contrasting shadows. To make the lighting more uniform, multiple sources are usually used.
When studio equipment is difficult to use, in the field, photographers aim their flash at another surface that reflects light, or attach diffusers to the flash. Canon decided to make their work easier for photographers and designed the Speedlite 470EX-AI flash, which automatically selects the optimal direction for lighting using artificial intelligence.
In auto mode, the flash turns towards the subject and illuminates it to calculate the distance, and then turns towards the ceiling or walls and calculates the distance to them. Having determined the position of the object in the surrounding space, the device calculates the most suitable angle for uniform illumination. However, nothing prevents the photographer from choosing the angle of illumination in manual and semi-automatic modes.
From the outside, the 470EX-AI flash looks just like any other flash, but inside it has motors in the base and hinge, and a sensor in the corner of the bezel. The maximum flash-to-subject distance is seven meters. Case dimensions are 74,6 x 130,4 x 105,1 mm, weight - 385 grams (excluding batteries). The smart flash will go on sale in April for $399.
