Whore of Babylon

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Whore of Babylon.

Meaning: A harlot, a woman of easy virtue.

Origin: The expression arose from the Apocalypse (17, 1 and 5): "I will show you the judgment of the great harlot ... on her forehead is written the name: mystery. Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of men."

Random phraseology:

Cast pearls before swine.

Meaning:

Wasting words talking to people who can't understand you.

Origin:

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ says: "Do not give anything holy to dogs and do not cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample it under their feet and, turning, tear you to pieces" (Gospel of Matthew, 7:6). In the Church Slavonic translation, the word "pearl" sounds like "beads". It was in this version that this biblical expression entered the Russian language.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Red wine speeds up fat burning in the liver 18.02.2015

Scientists from the University of Oregon have found that the use of dark varieties of muscat grapes, as well as juice and wine from these berries, helps fight excess weight and prevents fatty liver.

A study in mice showed that muscat grapes are a source of ellagic acid, which inhibits the growth of fat cells and speeds up fat metabolism. At the same time, chemical compounds found in grapes do not reduce body weight - by activating fat burning, ellagic acid speeds up metabolism and improves liver function in overweight people.

It's not just grapes that are high in ellagic acid: Strawberries, raspberries, cloudberries, blackberries, cranberries, pomegranates, as well as walnuts and pecans are also sources of ellagic acid.
