I stand on that, and I can not do otherwise

Martin Luther
Martin Luther

Phraseologism: On that I stand, and I can not do otherwise.

Meaning: About confidence in the truth of one's point of view on something, about unwillingness to change it, about loyalty to one's principles, beliefs.

Origin: The words of the German religious reformer, the founder of Protestantism Martin Luther (1483-1546), the first translator of the Bible into the German literary language. According to legend, Luther uttered these words (April 18, 1521) at the Worms Congress of Church Hierarchs in response to a proposal to abandon the fight against the papal throne. The reason for the conflict was that Martin Luther believed that the spiritual life of a Christian should be based on independent study of the Bible, and not on the interpretation of the Pope.

Random phraseology:

The death of one person is death, and the death of two million is just a statistic.

Meaning:

It is natural for a person to get used to someone else's death, to mass casualties, provided that he has the opportunity to look at them from the side.

Origin:

From the novel (ch. 8) "The Black Obelisk" (1956) by the German writer Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970), the author of many anti-war novels that deal with the fate of the so-called lost generation that survived the First World War. Sometimes the phrase is found in the form: "The death of one person is a tragedy, the death of two million people is just a statistic."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The ISS will become a filling station for satellites 21.01.2013

NASA is about to test a very promising satellite refueling system directly in Earth orbit on board the ISS. The first space refueling simulation is tentatively scheduled for January 23, 2013.

As early as July 12, 2011, the Atlantis shuttle unloaded a robotic refueling facility to the ISS. The device, called RRM, will seriously change approaches to the operation of space equipment, especially satellites, in the future. Today, after running out of fuel, satellites cannot maintain their orbit and, accordingly, do not perform their functions. As a result, millions of dollars have to be spent again to launch a new satellite, although the old one could have worked at least as much. It's the same as buying a new car after emptying the old one's tank.

Special satellites with RRM modules will be able to solve this problem. They will move within the busiest near-Earth orbit - geostationary, located at an altitude of about 22000 km. It is here that more than 400 satellites are located, providing the planet with meteorological data, communications, television, etc. If any of these satellites run out of fuel, the RRM will approach it and use special tools to make the necessary repairs and refueling.

The RRM module is comparable in size to a washing machine, although it weighs much more - about 250 kg. It is currently located on a 3,6-m Dexter manipulator mounted outside the ISS. The RRM module is equipped with a set of various tools: grippers, screwdriver, wire cutters, filling nozzle, etc. In 2012, RRM successfully cut two stranded wires with wire cutters.

In the new trial, RRM will use 4 other tools to accomplish an even more difficult task: filling through triple seal valves, valves found on many satellites that were never intended to be re-accessed in the first place. Most importantly, during the operation to remove insulation materials and refuel, RRM will be controlled from the Earth. In the future, tanker satellites will be controlled in this way - from a distance of thousands of kilometers, so it is necessary to prove the viability of this concept. If all goes well, the next test will take place in 2013, and all work on the RRM program is planned to continue until 2015.
