Phraseologism: A place under the sun.

Meaning: 1. The right to such a worthy existence as the speaker sees it. 2. Strong social position. 3. Business success.

Origin: For the first time in European literature, this expression is found in the work "Thoughts" by the French scientist and philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). He writes: "This dog is mine," these poor children said, "this is my place under the sun: this is the beginning and the image of the capture of the whole earth" ("Pensees", 1670, part I). Then this expression of Pascat is found in many French authors - Berenger (the poem "The Holy Union of Nations", 1927), Balzac, etc. Subsequently, it also passed into political vocabulary - it was often found in German magazines (70-80s of the XIX century. ), usually with reference to Pascal's work as the primary source. But this expression became popular after the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Germany (later its Chancellor) Count Bernhard Bülow (1849-1929) delivered a speech (December 6, 1897) in the German Reichstag, which received wide international publicity. He spoke about the capture of the Chinese port of Kiao-Chao by Germany: “We are ready to reckon with the interests of other great powers of East Asia, in the confidence that our interests will also meet their due respect. In a word: we do not want to drive anyone into the shadows, but we demand our places under the sun.
