Marius at the ruins of Carthage

Plutarch
Plutarch

Phraseologism: Marius at the ruins of Carthage.

Meaning: About a man who saw with his own eyes the collapse of all his hopes.

Origin: From the work "Comparative Biographies" ("Gaius Marius") by the ancient Greek historian Plutarch (c. 46 - c. 127). The Roman commander and politician Mari Gaius (156-86 BC) was elected consul six times, but lost in the seventh election and had to yield power to his rival Sulla. Nevertheless, Marius decided to disregard the law and defend power by force. But his attempt to subjugate the army of Sulla failed and he was forced to flee. Hiding from persecution, Marius landed on the African coast, on the site of the former city of Carthage, which, after the last Punic War, the Romans destroyed to the ground in 146 BC. e. Here, an envoy from the Roman governor of this province came to Mary with a demand to leave its borders. To which Marius replied: "Tell him (the governor) that you saw the exile Marius sitting on the ruins of Carthage." "So, as a warning to the governor," Plutarch writes about this episode, "he successfully compared the fate of this city with the vicissitudes of his fate."

Random phraseology:

Take on the zugunder.

Meaning:

To subject to punishment, to bring to account (obsolete).

Origin:

The origin of the phraseologism is associated with the times of German drill in the Russian army, and the zugunder is a distorted "zu hundert", which literally means "to a hundred" (strike) and is an order to punish the offender. However, there is another version, according to which zugunder is a distorted German "zu Hunden" (literally "to the dogs", in a swearing sense).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Too much sun for Germany 12.04.2011

Germany, which is actively developing solar energy, faced an unexpected problem. Homeowners who put solar panels on their roof not only save on electricity bills, but also receive a hefty subsidy for this expensive technique, which is why many have installed a home solar power plant.

However, it naturally gives the most energy in the middle of the day, when energy consumption is low, since, as a rule, no one is at home. Therefore, during the day, excess energy enters the public grid, and the energy company pays extra to the owner of the house for the generated electricity.

The number of private solar power plants on the roofs is already so large that the network can not cope with the "digestion" of excess energy. By the end of 2011, the total capacity of German solar energy will reach 30 gigawatts, which corresponds to the consumption of the entire country during the weekend.

Grid overload could shut down entire areas, so the Department of Energy is considering slowing down the installation of new solar panels.
