Phraseologism: Marathon.

Meaning: About something long, protracted (compared to usual practice) and exhausting.

Origin: Today, the name of sports running over a distance of 42 kilometers 195 meters. This is the distance between two Greek cities - Marathon and Athens. It was decided to run this distance in memory of the warrior who ran the path from Marathon to Athens without a single stop, hurrying to please the Athenians with the news of the victory over the huge Persian army in the battle of Marathon. The ancient Greek commander Miltiades defeated the Persians utterly, incapacitating more than six and a half thousand Persians. At the same time, the losses of the Greeks amounted to only 192 warriors. Thanks to this victory, another popular expression was born - "The laurels of Miltiades do not let me sleep."

The title of a Polish feature film (1974) filmed at the Panorama studio by director R. Załuski based on a script by Ireneusz Iredynski (b. 1939).
