Malbrook is going camping

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough
John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough

Phraseologism: Malbrook was going camping.

Meaning: Unlucky warrior, conqueror.

Origin: The beginning of a French song composed under King Louis XIV about the famous English commander the Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), who fought very successfully against France at that time. Before the battle of Malplaque (1709), a false rumor spread in the French army about the death of Malbrook (as the French pronounced this surname), and there, to celebrate, they composed this one of the most famous French songs. It sings that in vain the British are waiting for the return of the duke from the war. Easter passed, then the Trinity, but Malbrook is still gone and gone. Finally, a messenger appears, who tells about the death of the duke and his burial - about how his faithful officers escorted the commander on his last journey: "One carried his shell, the other his shield. The third - his long saber, and the fourth carried nothing "(N. Berg, Songs of different peoples, M. 1854). However, the Duke of Marlborough soon convincingly proved to the French that they buried him early. And they tried to forget this song in France. But during the reign (1774-1792) of King Louis XVI (1753-1793), it sounded again. In 1781 an heir was born to the king. To care for him, a nanny was invited from the province, who, while cradling the child, often hummed this song, forgotten in the capital. Queen Marie Antoinette liked it very much, and soon "Malbrook" began to be sung at court, and then in families of the third estate. In Russia, this song was also well known. It became especially popular during the Patriotic War of 1812, since it began to be perceived by everyone as an ironic commentary on Napoleon's plans to conquer Russia.

Random phraseology:

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Keyboard printing on paper 08.09.2020

Scientists at Purdue University in the US have developed a simple printing process that turns paper sheets from a notebook into a keyboard, music player interface, and can also make food packaging interactive.

The new method makes paper water-repellent by coating it with highly fluorinated molecules. Oil and dust are also not afraid of paper. This omniphobic coating allows multiple layers of circuitry to be printed on paper. In this case, the ink is not smeared between layers.

In addition, the paper electronic device is self-powered. It does not require any external batteries, as they receive energy from contact with the user.

The technology is compatible with traditional large-scale printing processes, so it's quick and easy to turn ordinary cardboard or paper into smart packaging or smart interface. The authors of the work hope that such "smart" paper can be used for food packaging or parcels: it can be used to check whether food is safe to eat, it can be used to sign a parcel by simply swiping a finger over the box.

Also, simple notebook sheets can be converted into music player interfaces so that users can select songs, play them, and adjust the volume.
