They were known only by sight.

"They were only known by sight"
"They were only known by sight"

Phraseologism: They were known only by sight.

Meaning: It is used in the literal sense - about intelligence officers whose real names remained unknown, also allegorically, playfully and ironically - about people who did not introduce themselves, about those who disappeared without giving any information about themselves, etc.

Origin: The name of the film (1967, USSR) is about "fighters of the invisible front" - Soviet underground fighters and saboteurs-scuba divers of the Great Patriotic War, who undermine enemy ships directly in the port of the city captured by the Germans. The film was shot by director G. Kuznetsov according to the script by Belo Junger and Eduard Rostovtsev (starring Irina Miroshnichenko and Alexander Belyavsky).

Random phraseology:

Dance on the volcano

Meaning:

Noisy, carefree fun on the eve of severe social upheavals.

Origin:

From French: "Nous dansons sur un volcan". Literally: "We are dancing on a volcano." The original source is the words of the French ambassador in Naples, Count Salvandi (1795-1856). On June 5, 1830, the Duke of Orleans (since July 30, 1830 - the French King Louis Philippe) arranged a ball in his Parisian palace of the Palais Royal in honor of his brother-in-law, King Charles X of Naples. Count Salvandi, who was at the ball, then uttered his famous words . Here is how he wrote about it in his memoirs: “When I passed the Duke of Orleans, who was lavished with compliments from all sides about the splendor of his celebration, I said to him a phrase that was picked up by all the newspapers the next day: “This is a completely Neapolitan holiday ... We are dancing on a volcano. "The words turned out to be prophetic: two months later, the king of Naples, Charles X, was overthrown during the revolution. It is partly analogous to the expressions -" Feast during the plague "and" Belshazzar's feast ".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The secret to strong beaver teeth 21.02.2015

The frightening sound of a drill is known to almost everyone. Unlike sharks, whose teeth are renewed throughout their entire fish life, in humans and most mammals, they change only once - from dairy to molars. Although here in rodents teeth grow all their lives. This is due to the fact that, no matter how trite it may sound, rodents gnaw, which is why they grind their teeth evenly. In order for these animals not to be left without the main tool for existence, nature gave them a mechanism for the constant growth of teeth, compensating for abrasion. But what about those who are given teeth once and for life? Researchers from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University have identified which elements increase the durability of tooth enamel and figured out why beavers can cut trees like a chainsaw.

Tooth enamel is the hardest tissue in our body. It is based on thin long threads of hydroxyapatite. The thickness of one such thread is only 50 nanometers, and the length is a thousand times greater. For clarity, if the height of a birch was a thousand times greater than the diameter of the trunk, then the tree would have a height of about a kilometer. Thousands of such threads are combined into bundles, but still very thin - twenty times thinner than a hair. These bundles are arranged in a certain direction, forming a kind of reinforcing frame of tooth enamel, and the space between them is filled with crystalline hydroxyapatite.

Hydroxyapatite is a mineral containing calcium ions, phosphate and hydroxyl ions. And although enamel is almost entirely composed of a mineral base, even very small amounts of other ions can greatly change its properties. For example, if part of the calcium, even the smallest, is replaced by magnesium ions, the enamel will become more susceptible to the action of acids. Simply put, it will dissolve faster. The same effect will be caused by the replacement of phosphate ions with carbonate. But if phosphate ions replace fluorine ions, the enamel will noticeably improve its properties. That is why toothpaste contains fluoride.

Where does the acid come from in the mouth, which has such a detrimental effect on the teeth, and why is it harmful to eat sweets, although they are not sour at all? The fact is that bacteria live in the mouth, and although they do not pose a threat to the body, they can harm tooth enamel. The remaining sugar serves as food for these bacteria. Everything would be fine if these same microorganisms did not process sugar into lactic acid, thereby increasing the acidity of the environment. The more acidic the environment, the faster the tooth enamel will break down. Yes, yes, the same acid-base balance. As far as we know, beavers do not abuse sweets, but nature still rewarded them with an additional mechanism that makes their teeth stronger. All the essence lies in the very ions that change the properties of enamel.

The researchers took tooth enamel samples from mice, rabbits, rats and beavers and subjected them to rigorous analysis using sophisticated equipment. They literally atom by atom studied the structure of the threads that make up the enamel, and found out an interesting thing. It turns out that the strength and resistance to acids is mainly affected by the amorphous substance, which contains minerals rich in iron or magnesium. Despite the fact that the proportion of such a substance is extremely small, it radically changes the protective properties of enamel. For example, beaver tooth enamel was found to be six times more resistant to acid than rabbit tooth enamel. All this is due to iron compounds, mainly ferrihydrite. It gives not only chemical resistance, but also increases the mechanical strength of tooth enamel. We can say that yes, the beaver really has iron teeth!

However, why hasn't toothpaste been made with iron minerals yet? Although we do not need to gnaw on aspen branches, it would be very nice to reduce visits to dentists. If you look at the teeth of a beaver, you will see that they are far from white - yellow, or even brown. These are absolutely healthy strong teeth, and iron compounds give them color. Not very aesthetically pleasing from a human point of view, but beavers don't seem to care too much about it.
