Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

ginkgo insecticide 01.11.2019

Chemists at Scripps Research (USA) have come up with an effective method to create a synthetic version of the plant compound bilobalide, which is naturally produced by ginkgo trees. This is a significant breakthrough because bilobalide and closely related compounds have potential commercial value as drugs and "green" insecticides.

Ginkgo trees produce an insect repellant compound, but it is not actually toxic to humans. The new method allows chemists to obtain and study bilobalide and related compounds relatively easily and much cheaper than previously possible.

The ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) is considered a living fossil. Its related species existed on Earth 270 million years ago, before the advent of the dinosaurs, and managed to survive the subsequent global cataclysms that destroyed the dinosaurs, as well as many plant and animal species.

Given this heritage, it is not surprising that individual varieties of ginkgo trees today are unusually hardy and long-lived. Some specimens are thousands of years old. Traditional Chinese medicine includes the use of ginkgo extracts to treat various ailments. It is also believed that even the leaves were used in ancient times as bookmarks to protect against paper-eating insects such as silverfish.

A likely factor in G. biloba's longevity is a set of insecticidal compounds found in its leaves and nuts. These include the ginkgolide compounds, which can cause dangerous bleeding in people who take them in high enough doses. As well as lesser-known ones, such as bilobalide, which has a strong effect on insects, but, apparently, is practically not toxic to humans. Bilobalide is also rapidly degraded in the environment, which is an excellent property for a "green" insecticide.

However, bilobalide has a complex carbon skeleton structure with eight oxygen atoms, which makes its synthesis inherently difficult. Previously published methods have been quite time consuming, partly because of the difficulty of getting all these oxygen atoms in the correct position.

The new synthesis method, developed principally by graduate students Megan Baker and Robert Demore, and by Ph.D. Masaki Ohtawa, culminated in a procedure in which the bowl-shaped molecular architecture was revealed and the final oxygen atom was placed at a precise location within it.
