Focus Description:

Lay a triangle of three matches on the table. Tell the audience that this is the "Bermuda Triangle" and let them see what happens with it now. Put a coin in the match triangle.

Cover it all with a playing card. Place a matchbox on the map, and place a glass of water and a straw for a cocktail on the box. In front of everyone, "turn" the coin into water. Then fill your mouth with some water through a straw. In your mouth, do the reverse "transformation" - water into a coin! Put the coin with your mouth on the back of your hand and show the coin to everyone.

Now remove the glass from the box. Remove the boxes from the card, pick up the card. Apart from three matches, there will be nothing in the Bermuda Triangle. Return the matches back to the box from which you got them to start the trick.

Focus secret:

For the demonstration, you need a box of matches, two identical coins of medium denomination, a playing card, a straw for a cocktail and a glass of water. One of the coins is hidden in the mouth behind the cheek from the very beginning; you take it out of your mouth "after the transformation" and show it. The very first coin in the Bermuda Triangle disappears into it with the help of a small flat magnet located inside a matchbox under the matches.

When you place a matchbox on top of a playing card, the coin is attracted through it towards the box. In the final part of the trick, first remove the glass of water from the box. Next, raise the card along with the box and the coin underneath, not visible to the audience. Remove the box from the map (slide it off it). Continuing to hold the box with the coin underneath, note to the audience that there is no coin among the three matches. Show a playing card on both sides and discard on the table to the side.

Remove the matchbox with matches from the case (the coin continues to remain under the box). Slowly return the three matches back to the box and, holding the coin slightly from below, insert the box back into the case with it. Now the closed box can be shown from both sides. For the spectators on the table, the coin, as it were, ceased to exist.

Atmospheric nitrogen battery 25.04.2017

Xin-Bo Zhang of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and colleagues have proposed a way to capture atmospheric nitrogen that could be used in a battery. The scientists described their development in an article published in the journal Chem.

As the most abundant gas in the Earth's atmosphere, nitrogen has long been an attractive option as a source of renewable energy. But nitrogen gas, which consists of two nitrogen atoms held together by a strong triple covalent bond, does not break down under normal conditions. Accordingly, the problem is to convert the chemical bond energy into electricity.

The principle of operation is based on reversing the chemical reaction that powers existing lithium-nitrogen batteries. Instead of generating power by decomposing lithium nitride (2Li3N) into lithium and nitrogen, the researchers' prototype battery runs on atmospheric nitrogen, which reacts with lithium to form lithium nitride. Its power output is short but comparable to that of other lithium metal batteries.

"This promising battery research based on a nitrogen fixation system not only provides fundamental and technical advances in energy storage technology, but also creates an advanced N2/Li3N (nitrogen-gas/lithium nitride) cycle for a reversible nitrogen fixation process," Xin said. Bo Zhang: "But the work is still in its early stages. More intensive efforts should be directed towards the development of battery systems."
