This is an oblong box, the length of which is 10,5 cm, the width is 8 cm, and the height is 10 cm. That is, with the lid open, this box should be perfectly square. On the front side, we must attach a metal plate, which will be driven by the loop. The entire box, together with the metal hinge, is painted black.

At one end of the upper surface of the plate there is a small button, which, when the plate is raised, finds itself in a special hole in the lock, through which the rear end of the lock bolt passes.

When the key is turned, as if to close the box, the bolt of the lock is pushed forward, and the plate rises to the front side, due to the fact that the button is in the prepared hole.

When the key is turned to open the box, the upper end of the bolt catches the button and locks the plate in its position. Now you can safely give the box to the public for inspection. But as soon as you turn the key again to close it, the back end of the bolt will push it forward again, release the button and the plate will fall.

For a trick, a card, such as an ace of diamonds, is placed on the bottom of the plate and rises with it to the front wall. The card that needs to be replaced, for example, the nine of spades, is placed in a box in front of the spectators, any of the spectators is invited to close the box. When you open the box, it turns out that the card has turned into an ace of diamonds.

Sometimes such boxes are made so that the record does not fall on the back side of the box, directly on it, but a little higher. Then you can put some object into this space, into which the card will later turn.

This box is similar to the previous one, but is used differently. In it, the plate is parallel to the back wall and is pressed against it by a spring. It can be lowered down so that it is parallel to the lower end, because a small latch protrudes from the inner surface of the front side, holding it in this position.

In this case, the lock is purely decorative, because there is not even a cavity for the key. A small button, located on the lower edge of the bottom, presses in the closed state of the box on a vertically standing carnation. This stud protrudes from the front of the box and closes the valve at the exact moment the bar is raised. This hides the card just placed in the box and frees the bird or some other object.

Similarly, you can make a cardboard box, the plate of which, lying flat on the underside of the box, leaves no empty space underneath.
