Focus Description:

The performer takes four identical sheets of white paper and hangs each one from the hook of the stand on the table.

Then he brings a lighted match to each sheet of paper. The sheets ignite and burn with a natural yellowish-reddish flame. As soon as they burn out, the performer puts four new sheets of exactly the same paper on the hooks. He lights the match again and brings it to the first sheet of paper - it lights up with a yellow flame. The second leaf flashes blue fire, the third bright red, and finally the fourth green.

Focus secret:

This focus is based on the use of chemical compounds. The performer will need 8 sheets of plain white paper from standard notepads and a metal stand with a crossbar, to which four hooks are screwed at a distance from each other slightly greater than the width of the sheet of paper (Fig. 26, A).

The first four sheets do not require any preliminary preparation. The second four sheets of paper are chemically treated with various compounds in advance.

To obtain a yellow flame, a solution of Bertolet salt is prepared with the addition of sodium nitrate. The red flame arises from a solution of Bertolet salt with an admixture of strontium nitrate. A green flame is obtained by using barium nitrate. Blue fire arises from a solution of copper nitrate.

All four strong solutions are prepared in different vessels. Each sheet of paper is thoroughly moistened in one of the solutions and hung to dry with wooden linen clips over the same vessel so that the solution dripping from the paper gets into it. When the paper dries well, it is moistened a second time and dried again. Then do this procedure again and finally dry the sheets. The paper must be moistened in the solution several times so that small crystals of salts are deposited in its pores, which will give the corresponding color to the flame.

Before the focus is demonstrated, four sheets of chemically treated paper are stacked and placed next to the usual four sheets on the table. First, ordinary sheets of paper are burned, and then specially prepared ones. This will enhance the effect of the number.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

When learning a language, it is better to write by hand 20.07.2021

When learning a new language, scientists have found that writing by hand is better than typing or watching videos.

In the study, volunteers learned the Arabic alphabet from scratch. They were divided into three groups: those who wrote by hand, those who typed text on the keyboard, and those who watched the video. Those who watched the video had to learn a letter and then immediately find that letter on the screen. The typing participants had to find the letter on the keyboard, and the handwritten participants had to write the letter with a pen on paper.

Each group was given six lessons. During this time, each volunteer had to learn the alphabet and make a minimum of mistakes during testing. People who wrote by hand learned it faster than others. Some of them learned the alphabet in just two sessions.

The scientists also tested other indicators of literacy: they wanted to see if the volunteers could "generalize" new knowledge and use letters to write new words and recognize unfamiliar words. Once again, the people who wrote by hand did a better job than anyone else.

Each study participant was an adult, but experts believe the same principles apply to children. The key, they believe, is that writing on paper reinforces what students learn about a letter, such as a sound, beyond their form.
