EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Living dolls. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: Are the assistants rolling onto the stage a platform covered on all sides with curtains on low four massive legs with rollers? The magician approaches the tent and pulls back all four curtains - the audience sees a platform covered with a carpet with tassels hanging along the edges - fringe. Above the platform, on four octagonal posts, lies a light roof, to which four curtains are attached on the sides (Fig. 201).
The artist shows that the platform is empty. A beautiful small chest with a closed lid is brought out from behind the scenes and handed to the magician, the artist opens the chest and takes out two small dolls from it. “Two dolls?” the magician is surprised. “Two small dolls! I’ll put them back in this chest, close it and put them here.” He places it on the platform in the middle and draws all four curtains. “As you can see, I put the dolls in the chest, closed it with a lid, put it here and closed the curtains. Now I will tell you one very interesting story about the dolls. This happened...”. At the very first words of the magician, the orchestra begins to play quietly, then louder and louder, completely drowning out his words; spectators only see; like an artist moves his lips. After a while, the music stops, and in the ensuing silence the magician continues to tell: “As you can see, the story is really interesting, and to prove to you that I was telling the truth, I will open this curtain. Like this! Now you see that everything happened exactly like this , as I told you: the chest grew and became big,” the chest shows (Fig. 202).
The illusionist approaches the chest, opens the lid - two assistants appear from the chest, dressed in the same way as the dolls. “You see, the dolls also grew, became big and even came to life (Fig. 203). Everything I told you turned out to be true!” The artist and his assistant help the assistants get out of the chest. The chest is closed and the platform is rolled backstage. At this time, the assistants perform a dance of “coming to life” dolls to the music.
Props: 1. Platform with secret upper and lower hatches. 2. Large folding chest. 3. The roof of the platform with a secret hatch. 4. Small chest. 5. Two small dolls. prop device. 1. Platform length 1,5-1,75 m (depending on the height and build of the assistants), width 80 cm, platform height from the ground 35 cm (including legs). There is a hatch hidden under the carpet, the door size of which is 130x50 cm. In Fig. 204 shows the hatch structure. The hatch cover is raised, inside it you can see a wide board on which the assistants lie down. The width of the board is 60 cm, the length is 140 cm. The board is suspended inside on two strong strips made from a fire hose.
These two strips hold the platform and prevent it from falling lower than it should. Strong rubber bands or light aircraft shock absorbers are laid on top of the strips, which constantly lift the lower platform board upward. The board is not visible due to the sides of the platform. As soon as the assistants lie down on the board, it will immediately fall down, held in place by strips of fire hose. This moment is shown in Fig. 205.
To prevent spectators from accidentally seeing the assistants, the entire space around the bottom board of the platform is covered with black material. It turns out something like a hammock in which the assistants lie down. The design of this “hammock” with locking strips and lifting shock absorbers is quite simple, you just need to add that on the top of the platform there are four corner flanges, into which four octagonal posts tightly fit, supporting the top. The ends of the posts are firmly held in pieces of pipes of the appropriate diameter, and the pipes, in turn, fit tightly into the corner flanges. Again, cut pipes of such a diameter are welded to the flanges that the ends of the pillars, that is, the pipes, fit tightly into the flange pipes without swinging. Exactly the same flanges are made in the roof of the apparatus for the upper ends of the posts. The platform is covered with a cloth cover with a cut hole for a hatch and four holes for posts. Tassels or fringes are sewn to the sides of the cover, which disguise the hammock platform when it falls down. Four massive legs (see Fig. 204) with rollers are screwed into the lower corners of the platform, thanks to which the device can easily roll along the floor. 2. A large folding chest, the dimensions of which depend on the size of the assistants. The approximate size of the bottom is 50x95 cm, the height of the chest is about 50 cm. The chest is foldable, and its structure is shown in Fig. 206. A - general view of the chest; The bottom of box B is solid made of thick plywood. 1 - side walls, intact, without cuts, made of thin strips of durable wood with plywood panels. These walls are shown separately in Fig. 206, B. Walls 1 are attached to the bottom with 5 small, strong hinges and can be folded inside the box. This can be seen in Fig. 206, B and C. The front and back walls are cut lengthwise and connected with hinges. Therefore they can also be folded. Walls 2 are designed so that they can be folded in half and placed on walls 1 (Fig. 206, D). A lid 4 is attached to wall 3 on hinges. When folded, the chest is shown schematically in Fig. 206, D. The thickness of each of the four walls and the lid should be no more than 15 mm. It is important that, when folded, the chest takes up as little space as possible. Its thickness when folded should not be more than 10-11 cm. The most difficult thing in making an illusion is a folding chest. Before you start making it, it is recommended to make a model - a model 1/10 of the actual size; this will greatly facilitate further work.
3. The roof of the platform with a secret hatch is made so that a folded chest can be hidden in it. The thickness of the roof should be such that the chest can fit into its sides and rest there on the edges. Once the hatch is opened, you just need to move the chest slightly to the side and it will fall out of the top hatch. The hatch cover opens into the platform. It is held in place by a latch. The hatch in the ceiling must be carefully disguised by painting or gluing plywood strips. In the corners of the lower plane of the roof, like the platform, there are flanges into which posts are inserted to support the roof. In Fig. 207 shows a cross section of the roof with a chest inserted inside; c - semicircular cornices, under which rings with curtains sewn to them move on iron rods.
4. The small chest is so simple that it is unnecessary to talk about its structure. Let us only remind you that it must be made exactly the same as the big one, and painted in the same way. 5. Two small dolls, dressed in the same way as the assistants in this act. Dolls should fit easily and fit well in the chest. Focus secret: The secret of the illusion is as follows: first, the lower hatch from which the assistants emerge; the second is a large folding chest into which assistants fit; the third is the top hatch in the roof, where the folded chest is placed. Preparation of the illusion begins behind the scenes by “charging” the folded chest into the upper hatch located in the roof. Having folded the chest and placed it in the hatch, the assistants close the hatch cover with the bolts. Then they lift the bottom hatch and the assistants lie down in it “jack” (one head to the other’s feet) to take up less space. The hatch is closed, the carpet is straightened and the curtains are drawn. Then work on the illusion takes place on stage in the following order: after the magician, having received the chest with dolls, places it on the lower hatch and closes all four curtains, both assistants, at a signal, quickly crawl out of the “hammock” hatch and stand so as not to interfere with the closing of the hatch. One of them lowers the hatch door and straightens the carpet that disguises the hatch. The second one at this time opens the valves in the ceiling hatch and slightly opens the hatch. The first one helps her. Both assistants place the removed folding chest on the floor, one of them closes and locks the top hatch, and the second at this time begins to unfold the chest. She lifts up the lid of the chest with the back wall, then begins to lift the front wall. The second assistant, having freed herself, begins to help her fold the chest. Having placed the front and back walls, the assistants support them with their knees, and, bending down, both simultaneously lift the side walls up. Once in place, the side walls hold the entire structure together, since the plates on these walls fit into the hook-shaped clamps attached at the top of the back and front walls. After this, one of the assistants quickly sits down in the chest, trying to take up as little space as possible, while the second one supports the lid of the chest. As soon as the first assistant sat down, she immediately, raising her hand, began to support the lid, and at this time the second assistant quickly sat down in the chest. Having sat down, the assistants give the prearranged signal to the magician and close the lid of the chest. The magician opens the curtains and lifts the lid of the chest. The assistants get up and, with the help of the magician and the assistant, leave the chest. The assistant closes the chest. A small chest is placed on the floor so that it does not fall when the hatch is opened. As soon as the assistants get out of the hatch, one of them, before closing it, places a small chest in the lower hatch and closes the hatch lid. The illusion should be rehearsed in parts. First of all, it is necessary to achieve speed, precision and accuracy in assembling the chest. Then you need to rehearse removing the chest from the top hatch, closing the hatch and assembling the chest. Now you can begin rehearsals for “charging” the assistants into the lower hatch and exiting the hatch upon a signal. Then they rehearse the entire illusion with the assistants emerging from the chest. The entire process, from the moment the lower hatch is opened until the assistants sit in the chest and close it with a lid, lasts no more than 15-20 seconds. This illusion makes a greater impression on the circus arena, where it is accessible to all-round visibility, but on the stage it is less impressive, so we recommend it for work in open areas. To store the illusion, one packaging box is made in which it can be transported. First, they put the platform in the box with the legs up, then they turn out the legs and put them and four posts, and put the roof on top of that. All parts are covered with soft pads. It is best to fold the curtain and place it in the bottom hatch along with a small chest. Author: Vadimov A.A.
