Focus Description:

On the stage there is a three-leaf screen with curtains missing to the floor, next to it is a nickel-plated tripod pedestal; there is also a small ladder and a large cube, on which white circles (glasses) are applied. The illusionist asks the assistant to show all these objects to the audience, after which the tripod is placed in the middle of the stage. The assistant places a cube on it. The magician opens the corner of the cube (it is made on hinges, Fig. 191) and invites the assistant to climb into it. The assistant substitutes a ladder and helps her.

A screen is placed on three sides of the cube, blocking it from the audience, who see the tripod from under the curtain and the open lid of the cube on top. The illusionist examines the screen around, and then, as if remembering something, takes a stick and slams the lid of the cube with it. Then the screen is folded and set aside. The performer opens the lid and, dropping a stick there, knocks inside. The cube is empty, the assistant has disappeared! To prove this, the assistant easily removes the cube and, turning it over, shows the audience, and then takes it backstage. "But where is the girl anyway?" - asks the illusionist. "I'm here!" - the assistant answers from the end of the auditorium and goes to the stage.

Focus secret:

On fig. 192 shows a cube from the back (from the audience). The folding wall is clearly visible, which contains the secret of this uncomplicated, but interesting illusion.

The plywood cube is painted black. He has white glasses on. When drawing points on a die, remember that the sum of them on two opposite sides should always be 7. So, if there are 3 on one side, then on the opposite side there should be 4; if 1, then 6; if 2 then 5.

The tripod and the screen are made of nickel-plated pipes. Ladder wooden, painted. The curtains are thin, silk. The height and general appearance of the screen are clear from fig. 192. The top of the cube is cut off and attached on hinges so that a person can enter the hole.

Now let's follow the progress of displaying the number. When the ladder assistant enters the cube, she immediately opens its back door. The audience can still see the girl's head, and the door is already prepared for the exit. At the same moment, an assistant from behind the back curtain extends a board to the tripod, which with small hooks hooks on the edges of the cube door. It turns out a kind of suspension bridge, invisible to the audience because of the screen curtain.

When the illusionist slams the top of the cube shut with a wand, the assistant instantly lies down on the board with her head to the back curtain. Grabbing a noose on a stick, which is handed to her from behind the curtain, she lies face down on the board, slipping her toes off of her shoes (so as not to slip off) and quickly rolls down behind the curtain. The board is immediately removed and cleaned.

The exit secret door is slammed imperceptibly by the illusionist himself, at the moment when he examines the cube. If desired, he can also open this door at the beginning of the experiment at the right time.

The place occupied by the screen and its height in relation to the apparatus must be strictly calculated so that the audience can constantly see the cube on the tripod and at the same time do not find the boards and holes in the back curtain of the stage. It is especially important to check "visibility" in theaters that have a second or third tier. This is one of the indispensable conditions for the success of the performance of the illusion.
