Focus Description:

Having placed two benches side by side in a special room at a distance of two or three inches from one another, the magician puts a piece of ice on them. The artist throws a wire over it and, passing it into the space between the benches, attaches it below to a weight of five or ten pounds, wrapping it around the bow. The distance of the lower side of the hanging weight from the floor should not be much more than the thickness of the ice. The magician locks the door, and gives the key to one of the spectators.

After a while, the magician asks to open the door. Spectators see that the wire is no longer wrapped around the ice, but lies with a weight on the floor.

Focus secret:

The wire, pressing on the ice due to gravity, will make it melt in the place of its pressure, but after the passage it freezes again and again a solid piece is obtained.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Shift work is harmful to health 25.10.2023

Swedish researchers from the Institute of Stress at Stockholm University have found that shift work can have a negative impact on human health. In their new study, they compared different forms of such work, including traditional shifts and shortened working hours.

The results showed that regardless of the form of shift work, all groups faced similar health problems, including stress, sleep disturbances and chronic fatigue. These factors can lead to serious consequences such as cancer and imbalance between personal and professional life.

Based on the findings, the researchers emphasize the need to create favorable working conditions for workers with non-standard schedules, including a ban on consecutive night shifts and the introduction of mandatory regular breaks.

Such measures are aimed at minimizing the harmful effects of shift work on health and ensuring a balance between work and personal life of workers.
