Focus Description:

Take two caps from the table and close the lower end of the tube with one of them, and the upper end with the other. Spectators will see that the tube into which the candle was inserted is closed with caps on both sides. Immediately remove both caps from the tube and look through the tube - the candle has disappeared.

Put the phone down on the table and approach one of the spectators. Quickly reaching into one of his inside pockets of his suit, remove a burning candle from there.

Focus secret:

The secret of the focus lies in the "candle", which consists of three parts (fig.a). Its middle part is a brass tube with a diameter of about 20 mm, a wall thickness of 0,4-0,5 mm and a length of 15 cm. Towards the lower end, the tube is very strongly ground from the inside so that when it is placed in the outer case, On the one hand, she seemed completely invisible.

After the edges of the inside of the tube are ground off, it should be painted with white enamel. When the tube dries, wipe it with a skin so that it does not shine and becomes like a stearin candle.

Then the upper part of the "candle" is machined out of white plastic or strong wood. Its lower end should enter the tube, and the upper end should not be wider than the diameter of the tube. A recess is made in the upper part of the "candle", into which a small piece of a real candle with a wick is inserted. A small copper plug is inserted into the lower part of the “candle” tube, the side part of which from below should only slightly extend beyond the edges of the tube. In the middle of both parts of the "candle" there are threaded holes: in the upper part - from the bottom side, and in the lower part - from the top. The key must be screwed into this thread.

If you now put the upper and lower parts on the tube, then the "candle" for the focus will be ready. It remains only to paint the upper part so that it does not differ from a distance from the "candle" tube. The lower, copper, part is not visible to the audience, since the "candle" is in the candlestick, and when it is taken in hand, this part is hidden by hand.

The case (tube) for the "candle" should be such that the tube-"candle" easily, without friction, enters into it and fits snugly with its walls to the walls of the case. The case must also be soldered from brass 1,5 mm thick. Its length should be equal to the length of the "candle". The caps of the case, which include the upper and lower parts of the "candle", are machined from brass tubes. Inside, they are bored out to the outer ends so that, being put on a case with a "candle" inside it, they tightly cover the upper and lower parts and, when removed from the case, can remove these parts from the "candle".

The removal of the "candle" parts from the caps is aided by a thread in the center of both parts of the "candle" and a key. After screwing the key into parts, carefully remove them from the caps. Covers are soldered into the caps from the outside. In order not to confuse the caps, strips are applied to them with a cutter - one strip on the top and two strips on the bottom.

First, a cap with one strip is put on, and then with two. Previously, the cap with one strip is also removed. Then, in the opened hole, with the index finger of the left hand, the inner tube is pressed against the outer tube, so that when the lower cap is removed, the "candle" does not come out. The tube-case and caps must be nickel-plated.

The candle that is pulled out of the spectator's pocket must be an exact copy of the "candle" that disappears in the case. You can make it from any material and, after painting, pour it over, like the first one, with hot stearin. The main secret part of the "candle" is a very small lighter with a strong wheel that produces large sparks (fig.b).

A wick pre-soaked in aviation gasoline is inserted into a hole drilled inside the "candle". The lighter is attached motionless so that the sparks from it fall exactly on the wick.

You can put a "candle" in the viewer's pocket like this. Lower the "candle" inside the left sleeve, attaching it with a rubber band to your arm. Approaching the viewer, unbutton the buttons of his jacket with your right hand and, moving him to the floor to the side, come close to the viewer, fixing his attention on your right hand. At this time, reach into his pocket with your left hand and quickly lower the "candle" there. Then sharply take out your left hand and, as if continuing to look for something, put your right hand into his pocket, light the "candle" and slowly take it out. When showing the "candle" to the audience, cover the lighter with your hand, as if you want to protect the flame from the wind.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Computer memory helps human 22.12.2014

To better remember something new, try offloading your memory by feeding old information from your brain to the computer.

By storing information on a computer hard drive or on a "flash drive", we better remember the next piece of information - this is the conclusion reached in their work by Benjamin C. Storm and Sean M. Stone from the University of California at Santa Cruz (USA).

Twenty students participated in the experiments of psychologists, who had to study two PDF files in order to remember as much as possible of what was written in them. Each file had a list of nouns, and the first list was closed immediately after reading. At the same time, some were told to simply close it, while others were told to save it to a certain place on the computer. The second file was read for the same amount of time as the first, but after the experiment participants had to immediately say how many words from it they remembered. And only then they were checked about the first list - the one that they closed after reading and moved on to the second.

It turned out that most of the words from the second list were remembered if the first one was not just closed, but specially saved on the hard drive. That is, in a person’s memory, it seemed as if more space was freed up for a new portion of words, because he saved the previous ones on an “external medium”. The results were confirmed in another similar experiment with twice as many volunteers. However, this time there were some nuances. So, if the students were told that the saved list is not so important, that, of course, it needs to be saved, but if it suddenly becomes unavailable, then it’s okay, then in this case they memorized the second list without any advantages, as if the first list they just closed without saving.

In previous works on the interaction between computer memory and living memory, it was said that when we store information in a computer, it becomes more difficult for us to remember it ourselves. Long-term neural memory with old information becomes inaccessible - because we know that we "copied" them to the hard drive. However, as it turns out, there is also a positive side here: at the same time, we free up cognitive and psychological resources for something new.

Although psychologists have used only computer memory in experiments, it is possible that the same effect occurs if we write something down on a piece of paper. However, whether this is true or not, whether the type of "external carrier" plays any role can be clarified only after additional experiments - as well as the neural mechanism underlying the described phenomenon.
