But maybe, experience with a pipette did you not succeed? This happens if the tube is contaminated with something greasy. If, say, they used to take vaseline oil with a pipette, or camphor oil, or something else like that. Then the law of communicating vessels is still violated, but only in the opposite direction. The water level in a greasy tube will be lower than in a glass!

This experience is worth doing on purpose. Look carefully at the surface of the water in the tube of a greasy pipette. Now you already know what to pay attention to. The surface in the tube is not concave, it is convex, as if the water is repelled from the greasy walls!

It turns out that capillarity lifts the liquid up only if this liquid wets the walls of the tube.

So it's all about wetting! If the liquid wets the walls, if it sticks to them, this creates a force that pulls the liquid up. Well, - and if it does not wet, if it repels, a force arises that squeezes the liquid down.

You may have heard that there are raincoats made of water-repellent fabric. It is not solid, it does not have an impervious film of rubber or plastic. But each fiber of this fabric is covered with a special substance, to which water does not stick, does not wet. And therefore water is not absorbed into the fabric. On the contrary, she repels!

These coats are much nicer to wear than regular ones. After all, they allow air to pass through, do not interfere with the skin to breathe (You know, of course, that a person breathes not only with the lungs, but also with the skin, the entire surface of the body.) But it is not recommended to wash these raincoats. Indeed, by washing off dirt, you can also wash off the water-repellent composition, and then the fabric will begin to get wet, like any other!

If you have a raincoat or jacket made of water-repellent fabric, wear them carefully, try not to get them dirty.
