The experience of the physicist Plato clearly shows how, under the action of surface tension forces, a liquid turns into a ball. For this experiment, alcohol is mixed with water in such a ratio that the mixture has the density of an oil. Pour this mixture into a glass vessel and introduce vegetable oil into it. The oil is immediately located in the middle of the vessel, forming a beautiful, transparent yellow ball. For the ball, such conditions are created as if it were in zero gravity.

We will do this experience in miniature. And the size of the ball will be small, and it will be possible to observe it only for about ten seconds.

Find a small flat bottle of perfume or cologne. A round bottle is not suitable, because if you look through it at the ball, the spherical shape will be distorted. The bottle must be clean and dry. Fill it with vegetable oil. Then pour water into some small clean jar and dilute potassium permanganate in it so that the water turns purple.

Pick up a solution of potassium permanganate with a pipette and, piercing the surface of the oil in the vial, release one small drop. A drop, entering the oil, will immediately turn into a purple ball and begin to slowly sink to the bottom of the bottle. Water is slightly denser than oil, so the ball sinks, but during its journey to the bottom, it is almost in a state of weightlessness, so its shape is close to spherical. The smaller the ball, the slower it descends and the closer its shape to spherical. After all, its shape is affected not only by gravity, but also by friction against oil.

Let's continue our experience. Add a little clean water to the oil bottle, it will immediately sink to the bottom and form a small layer, let's say, one centimeter. There is a clear line between oil and water. Start releasing water drops from the pipette into the oil again. They, as before, turning into balls, will sink to the bottom. But, approaching the border of oil and water, still at some distance from it, the balls press so hard on the oil that this pressure makes a recess in the border with water, and only then they sink into it. See what this glycerin drops experience would look like. Glycerin is denser than water. Glycerin balls both descend faster and put much more pressure on the oil-water boundary.

After the experiments, let the oil settle well and carefully pour it without sediment into a clean dish. The oil can be used for cooking.

The experience of Plateau in miniature form can also be done in another way. But for this experiment, you need to take a very small flat vial so that quite a bit of oil can fit in it - about two tablespoons. The fact is that if after the previous experience the oil could be used for food, now the oil will become unusable, and the food must be protected.

So let's get to the experience. Your oil is ready, you need to prepare a mixture of water and cologne. Take a thimble as a dish. Drop a few drops of water and the same amount of cologne into it. Stir the mixture, draw it into a pipette and release one drop into the oil. If the drop, becoming a ball, goes to the bottom, then the mixture turned out to be heavier than oil, it must be lightened. To do this, add one or two drops of cologne to the thimble. Cologne is made from alcohol and is lighter than water and oil. If the ball from the new mixture does not start to fall, but, on the contrary, rises, it means that the mixture has become lighter than oil and a drop of water should be added to it. So, by alternating the addition of water and cologne in small, drop doses, it is possible to achieve that a ball of water and cologne will "hang" in oil at any level.

Miniature Plateau Experience

The classic Plato experience in our case looks the other way around: the oil and the mixture of alcohol and water are reversed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The temperature in the Arctic has reached a maximum 06.12.2020

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) testifies that global warming has created a "completely different climate" in the Arctic.

The climate crisis, provoked by human activity, has changed the northern continent beyond recognition. This was told in their new study by NOAA experts.

For the past seven years, the Arctic has recorded the highest temperatures since 1900. Until September 2020, the second warmest 12-month period was recorded in the northern polar region.

The Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the planet and has already turned into a hotter, greener area, with less ice every year.

The anthropogenic climate crisis has led to the fact that in some Arctic regions it was abnormally hot in 2020. In some regions of Siberia, for example, the average temperature in the first half of the year reached a record 5 °C. And in June, in the city of Verkhoyansk, the thermometers rose to 38 ° C. This is the highest temperature ever recorded north of the Arctic Circle.

Meanwhile, Arctic sea ice thickness has halved over the past 42 years. In 2020, the rapid melting of glaciers and warming Arctic waters have triggered an active growth of oceanic flora and changed the behavior of bowhead whales.
