New membrane will reduce the cost of water filtration

05.01.2021

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and Pennsylvania (USA) have created a new membrane for water purification with a uniform density at the nanoscale. This structure of the membrane allows you to get more clean water and make the filtration process cheaper.

Desalination membranes remove salt and other chemicals from water. The way the purification takes place is a seemingly very simple process: salt water is passed through a filter - pure water flows out from the other side. But there are many subtleties and complexities within the process.

The research team determined that the desalination membranes are incompatible in terms of density and mass distribution, which can hinder their performance. Uniform density at the nanoscale is the key to increasing the amount of pure water that these membranes can produce. The uniform density made the new membrane significantly thicker than current counterparts. However, as previous studies have shown, thick membranes are actually more permeable. This came as a surprise because the thickness was thought to reduce the amount of water that could pass through the membranes.

Scientists have developed three-dimensional reconstructions of the nanoscale structure of the membrane using modern electron microscopes. They modeled the path that water takes through these membranes to predict how efficiently the water could be purified based on the new structure. In the article, the authors report that the efficiency of the membranes has become 30-40% higher. This means that they can purify more water with significantly less energy consumption. The opening could expand access to clean water and lower water bills for both individual homes and large farms.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Single-chip systems Qualcomm IPQ8074 and QCA6290 17.02.2017

Qualcomm introduced IPQ8074 and QCA6290 single-chip systems supporting Wi-Fi 802.11ax. The first is designed to serve as the basis for wireless network equipment, and the second is designed for client devices. According to the manufacturer, he is the first to offer such a kit.

Adopting 802.11ax can quadruple the capacity of Wi-Fi networks while extending the battery life of mobile devices. The new SoCs support 12-stream connectivity (eight streams in the 5GHz band and four in the 2,4GHz band), MU-MIMO configurations, 80MHz channels. Another feature is support for OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) modulation used in cellular networks and traffic scheduling.

The manufacturer notes that the full benefits of innovations are revealed in equipment that supports 802.11ax, however, devices of previous generations that support 802.11ac and 802.11n will work better in 802.11ax networks.

In the IPQ8074 description, the manufacturer highlights 8x8 MU-MIMO support and a high degree of integration. The single-chip system configuration includes an RF unit, MAC and signal processor, as well as a quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor and a dual-core network accelerator. The microcircuit is designed for release according to the standards of 14 nm.

In turn, the QCA6290 supports 2x2 MU-MIMO and a peak speed of 1,8 Gb / s, which is achieved through the DBS (Dual Band Simultaneous) mechanism, which allows combining channels in the 2,4 and 5 GHz bands, and high-order modulation (1024 QAM). Another advantage is proprietary power optimization that complements the built-in 802.11ax power saving technologies.
