soft robot for the ocean

17.10.2020

The underwater environment is one of the least explored by mankind. And specifically to help researchers study it in more detail, while not harming corals, as well as marine life in general, engineers from the University of California at San Diego decided and successfully created a squid robot that should be ideal for this purpose. The peculiarity of this robot is that it is "soft". And in general, this is its main advantage, because, unlike hard robots, it will cause much less harm to underwater life than "hard" ones.

In order to create this squid robot, the researchers used almost exclusively soft materials, such as acrylic polymer. The most rigid parts can only be considered those that were printed on a 3D printer and also cut by a laser. The research team, in her own words, drew inspiration from how a real squid moves underwater so that the robot can move independently. It works as follows - the "squid" takes some water into its body, after which it compresses it, thereby pushing the water out and swimming forward.

It is also worth noting the fact that the invention can adjust the position of the nozzle, making it possible to swim in absolutely any direction. According to the creators, the squid robot is capable of swimming at a speed of 0,8 kilometers per hour. Yes, in fact, this is not so much, but in any case, this robot is faster than the vast majority of other soft robots. And of course, the robot also has a special waterproof compartment in which you can place a camera, or any other sensor or equipment of the appropriate size for collecting information and recording video.

Michael T. Tolley, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, commented on this invention as follows: “Basically, we have recreated all the key features that squids use for high-speed swimming in any directions. This is the first robot that is not attached to anything, which is able to generate jet impulses for fast movement, just like a squid. These impulses are generated by changing the shape of their own body, which in turn significantly increases the efficiency of swimming. So very soon, if this project becomes widespread, the study of the deep sea will become a much safer thing for underwater flora and fauna.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Durable and flexible rubberized concrete 03.03.2024

Engineers in India conducted an experiment to study the effect of adding rubber granules to high-strength concrete. Experts offer a new look at solving the problem of recycling used tires, making concrete more flexible and effective in absorbing vibrations.

This innovative solution can transform the performance of a building material, making it more flexible and suitable for use in high vibration environments. Further improvement of mixtures opens up the prospect of creating more efficient and sustainable structures in the future.

Concrete, as the most popular building material, is constantly being improved using new technologies. A team of engineers from India proposed replacing part of the sand in high-strength concrete with waste tire granules. This will not only solve the problem of rubber disposal, but will also add new properties to the material, making it more flexible and capable of absorbing vibrations.

Before conducting the experiments, the scientists reviewed past studies that showed that adding rubber particles to concrete could degrade its strength. However, in this study, taking into account different particle sizes and their proportions, it was possible to achieve an optimal combination of strength and ductility.

The results showed that replacing part of the sand with rubber granules at a level of less than 10% maintained sufficient strength of the concrete, while improving its ductility and vibration damping ability. After modifications to the composition, such as the addition of reinforcing fibers, rubberized concrete can become a promising material for the construction of earthquake-resistant structures.

As a result of the experiments, it was found that when replacing five, ten and fifteen percent of sand with rubber particles, the strength of hardened concrete decreased by 14, 28 and 51 percent, respectively. The most noticeable changes were observed in compounds with the highest rubber content, which resulted in a decrease in the flexibility of the material, but the vibration absorption coefficient increased significantly. In addition, as the scientists note, the addition of rubber particles measuring 0,6 millimeters initially reduced the strength of the material, but after 224 days its strength increased significantly.

When replacing less than ten percent of sand with particles of waste tires in the concrete composition, sufficient strength of the material is maintained, and its ability to absorb vibrations and ductility increases. With further improvements in the composition, such as the addition of reinforcing fibers, modified concrete can potentially be used in the construction of earthquake-resistant structures.
