Carbon ring

20.08.2019

Chemists from the University of Oxford and the IBM Research Center have reported the first successful synthesis of a molecule containing eighteen carbon atoms arranged in a ring. And yes, there is no mistake here, they received exactly the molecule - in a single copy. However, this synthesis was very different from the usual chemical experiments. First, the researchers took a molecule that already contained the prototype of the future carbon ring, but it was stabilized by a kind of "paper clips" that did not allow it to fall apart.

The resulting workpiece was then placed on a specially prepared substrate. After that, at low temperature and low pressure, using an atomic force microscope, those very paper clips were sequentially separated from this molecule, leaving one carbon ring consisting of eighteen atoms. What is most surprising, the molecule did not fall apart and remained "lying" on the substrate intact.

Most of all, researchers were interested in the question of how the bonds between carbon atoms in the ring are arranged. Let's imagine that carbon has four "arms" - they will symbolize four chemical bonds. When such four-armed atoms are in a ring, they have two options for holding on to each other. The first option is when each atom holds a neighbor to the left and right with both hands. In this case, all bonds in the ring will be the same in length and strength. Alternatively, the carbon atom can hold the neighbor on the left with one hand, and the neighbor on the right with all the remaining three hands. Then single bonds and triple bonds will alternate in the ring. It is precisely the second option that was confirmed in practice for a carbon ring of eighteen atoms.

What could be useful in this unusual substance, if only to obtain one molecule of it, you need to spend such a huge effort? The researchers suggest that such systems may have the properties of semiconductors, and it is quite possible that they will find their application in the future. In addition, this work opens up a whole new direction in the synthesis of carbon compounds.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Moisture resistant Braven 855s speaker 30.07.2013

Braven has introduced a new compact speaker, the 855s, designed for use away from civilization and where conventional speakers can be irreparably damaged. It is protected from water ingress thanks to a special rubberized case, so you can safely take it with you on vacation.

The Braven 855s does not require wires at all - with a sound source, which can even be a cell phone, it connects directly over the air using Bluetooth technology. In this case, the distance between the source and the speaker should not exceed 10 meters.

The power of the Braven 855s, given its compact size, is very good - exactly 20 watts. It is also fashionable to connect to it by wire, as there is a 3,5 mm input available. The case, we recall, is protected from water and meets the IPX3 specification.

The speaker has a battery life of 20 hours and can act as a charger for smartphones and other handheld devices. And another great feature of the Braven 855s is that it can be used as a headset thanks to its built-in microphone. Again, you can use the Bluetooth module to communicate with your mobile phone.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price is exactly $300.
