Experiments with e-waste

24.07.2018

Geologists in Queensland, Australia have discovered a unique new type of beneficial bacteria that picks up the smallest grains of gold and processes them into larger bars called nuggets. This discovery will allow mining companies to develop previously unpromising deposits, but the most interesting area of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbapplication for new bacteria will be the processing and extraction of gold from old electronics.

"E-waste contains quite a lot of gold and some other precious metals," says Frank Reith, professor at the University of Adelaide. the amount of which is in every mobile phone or computer".

It is noted that electronic waste, old mobile phones, computers, TVs, etc., thrown away in 2016 around the world, contained valuable materials worth $ 84 billion, of which $ 29 billion accounted for the value of gold.

“Now we are experimenting with various types of electronic waste and developing a complete technological cycle for extracting gold from it, the main “actors” of which are new bacteria,” says Dr Ollie Crush, a scientist working for the New Zealand Mint.

The found bacteria work by processing various alloys in their womb and filtering out all metals except gold. As a result, the bacterium forms a nanoparticle of high purity gold, which is attached to the "embryo" of the future nugget. This is a rather slow process, the procedure for the complete extraction of gold from e-waste can take from 17 to 58 years, which is very, very long in order to consider the possibility of practical application of the "bacterial" method of extracting gold.

However, scientists working with new bacteria are going to involve genetic scientists in the near future. And, it is likely that geneticists will be able to find and carry out appropriate genetic changes that will greatly accelerate the "gold-mining function" of a new strain of these extremely beneficial bacteria.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Golden military uniform 24.02.2013

A group of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is developing a completely new type of "smart" military clothing that can replace "iron boxes" with electronics. In the new uniform, gold microfibers woven into the fabric will allow you to monitor the health of the fighter, provide communication with the commander, detect chemical and bacteriological threats, and perform many other functions.

The golden thread plays the role of a kind of multifunctional optical fiber. The network of filaments is not transistors or processor circuits, they are a device in themselves capable of processing a wide variety of signals. For example, the fibers can work as a friend/foe identification system: it is enough to point the laser pointer of the machine gun at a stranger, and the golden microfibers will receive a signal and send it to the same microfibers in the requester's shirt. Also, the fibers can potentially detect injuries, abnormal body temperature, work as a radio antenna, etc. Moreover, tests of the communication functions of the "golden" uniform have already been carried out, so far it provides communication only in the line-of-sight zone at a distance of up to 75 meters, which, nevertheless, is a good help to regular radio communication systems. In particular, the "smart" uniform can extend the range of voice control by several tens of meters, which in itself is a great achievement.

MIT is now using the same method to produce gold microfiber as it does fiber optics. Because of this, the gold fibers are still too thick - about 1 mm in diameter. Scientists plan to reduce the thickness of the fibers to 100 microns and test a wide variety of smart uniform technologies within 10 years.

In addition to gold, many other materials and structures can be woven into the fabric of the uniform, including microfluidic channels for fluids, which can perform a variety of functions, such as transmitting sound or detecting pathogens.
