Single lens 4D field camera

22.08.2017

The ability of robots and self-driving cars to perceive the world around them largely depends on the sensors and cameras used in their designs. Not long ago, researchers at Stanford University and the University of California San Diego completed the development of a new 4D Monocentric Light Field Camera, which will allow robots to gain much improved "vision". At the same time, the design of the new camera contains only one spherical lens, which makes it simple and provides a viewing angle of 138 degrees.

The aforementioned spherical lens was developed at one time as part of the Pentagon Advanced Research Programs DRAPA program called Soldier CENtric Imaging with Computational Cameras (SCENICC). A camera lens with such a lens covers one third of the circular area, while the resolution of the 4D camera is 125 megapixels. Note that in the previous version of the 4D camera, fiber optic lines were used, which served to scan a spherical image onto the photosensor plane. This approach worked, but it was too expensive to implement.

The new camera dispenses with fiber optic lines, all the work of digital signal processing and implementation of light field technology falls on the shoulders of algorithms developed by specialists from Stanford University, which provides the pictures taken by the camera with a "fourth dimension".

The basis of light field photography technology is the calculation of the direction of light rays entering the objective lens. And the received direction data is combined in the final file with the traditional "two-dimensional" data read from the photosensor. Exactly the same technology is implemented in Lytro consumer field cameras, it allows you to focus on an arbitrary point in the image after the picture has been taken. The same feature will allow robots to focus on images of various objects, removing interference such as dust, rain or fog. In addition, the 4D camera image data will allow the robot to calculate the distance to the object with a fairly high accuracy.

So far, the researchers have created one prototype 4D camera, which is proof of the performance of the technologies used. After some improvements in both the design of the camera and its software, this camera can be used in robot designs capable of operating in complex environments, in robot cars, in virtual and augmented reality systems.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Samsung U32D970Q UHD Monitor 05.08.2014

Samsung Electronics has announced its flagship UHD monitor, the U32D970Q.

The panel is made on the PLS matrix. The monitor is a professional grade product and is said to be suitable for users whose activities involve working with graphics, photo, video, and design systems. The PLS-matrix provides "perfect image output without loss and distortion."

The U32D970Q is a 31,5" UHD monitor. Its resolution is 3840x2160 pixels. According to this indicator, the panel is equivalent to four Full HD monitors installed side by side, and in terms of the number of displayed colors it exceeds a standard monitor by 64 times.

It is noted that each U32D970Q monitor is individually factory calibrated in 25 zones. The user also has the possibility of self-calibration using special software to correct gamma, backlight uniformity, and white balance.

To connect signal sources, there are HDMI 1.4, DVI-DL interfaces, as well as two DisplayPort 1.2 connectors. When using two sources at the same time, the monitor will output the signal from both devices thanks to the Picture-in-Pictrure function - the image of the small window will be reproduced in its original resolution up to Full HD (1920x1080 pixels), while the main picture will remain in the highest UHD format.

In addition, the innovative Quad Picture-by-Picture function allows you to effectively work with all four connection sources at the same time - using this function, it is possible to simultaneously display images from four devices at once in Full HD resolution.

The monitor is also equipped with a USB hub with 4 USB 3.0 connectors for connecting peripherals.
