The danger of searching for extraterrestrial life

31.07.2017

Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said that he is against the search for extraterrestrial life, as it can be dangerous.

Hawking admitted that the longer he lives and studies the world, the more he becomes convinced that we are not alone in the universe. But he urges other scientists to approach this fact with caution.

Stephen cited the struggle of Native Americans and Columbus as an example. The Indians were very warlike, bloodthirsty and posed a great threat to the team.

The scientist believes that there is a high probability that this case can be repeated with alien civilizations. He recalled that the planet Gliese 832c was recently discovered, on which life may well be present, since it is very similar to ours.

Stephen Hawking urges the world not to react joyfully and not to make hasty decisions if we receive a signal from her, since we have no idea what kind of temperament those creatures can have.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The influence of the heart on feelings 11.05.2020

Although the heart beats on its own, and the brain cannot command the heart muscle when to contract and when to relax, the heart still listens to the brain. For example, in a dangerous situation, the brain makes the heart beat faster, and in a relaxed state, it allows it to beat less often. But not only the heart listens to the brain - the brain also listens to the heart.

The work of the heart can be divided into two phases: systole and diastole. During the systolic phase, the heart ejects blood from itself into the vessels, and then it goes through the body, during the diastole, the blood enters the heart. Previously, employees of the Institute of Consciousness and the Human Brain of the Max Planck Society found that perception changes depending on the phase of the heart rhythm: for example, if a weak current was applied to the finger, then the person felt the electrical tingling better during diastole - and during systole the sensitivity worsened.

Scientists have figured out what happens to the brain in the course of the heart rate. There are special waves in brain electrical activity called P300 that are thought to be associated with consciousness. And during systole, these "conscious" waves were suppressed. That is, the brain ignores those stimuli that are associated with the pulse. But since the conscious perception as a whole is muffled, then some weak signals from the outside world that fall on systole also pass by it. By the way, a few years ago we already wrote about how the brain closes the heart rate from our attention - after all, if we heard the heart rate, then at best it would distract us from what is happening around, and at worst - we would just went crazy.

If the brain does not suppress the perception of systole so much, then it generally processes external stimuli worse, even if they are strong. That is, the attention of the brain is dispersed between internal physiology and the outside world.
