TV damages the brain

We hear so often about the harm from the TV that someone might have a question - is there any evidence of this very harm?

The study by Kristine Yaffe of the University of California at San Francisco involved more than 3 people aged 000 to 18 who were followed for 30 years: they were regularly asked how much time they spend in front of the TV, and Do they do any physical exercise? Then, after 25 years, they were asked to perform a series of cognitive tasks that could be used to determine the speed of assimilation of information, verbal memory (that is, how much of what was said a person can keep in mind at a time) and the ability to organize their own activities (that is, the ability to plan, distribute attention between different tasks, etc.).

The results were as follows: those who spent three or more hours in front of the TV daily, in tests of mental abilities (not in all, but in several), showed lower results than others. Those who exercised little—exercise was measured by time and intensity—showed poor results on any one of the tests. As for those who also watched a lot of TV, and at the same time neglected physical education, the likelihood that they would fail any of the tests was doubled.

On the one hand, here, of course, the participants' own answers were taken into account, that is, their reports about how much time they watch TV and how often they exercise can be subjective. On the other hand, they were observed for quite a long time - as much as 25 years. The authors of the work themselves cannot say what specific physiological mechanisms link the time spent in front of the TV and the deterioration of mental abilities (note that such a deterioration happened in not quite old people).

The content of the TV programs in this case was not followed, so, obviously, the whole point here is the notorious inactivity; one must think that sitting in front of a computer or laptop monitor for a long time can lead to exactly the same consequences. From this point of view, there is nothing new here - there are a lot of works on the correlation between physical education, sports, yoga, and so on. and brain state. Exercise is known to help the brain fight aging by providing a good blood supply to areas of the brain that are critical for higher cognitive tasks.

And long daily walks improve memory in older people. However, most of these studies are carried out rather quickly, and they usually focus on the elderly. As for long-term projects, like the one we described above, they are, for obvious reasons, performed much less often, but the results they look more convincing - and more frightening: it turns out that you need to think about the state of your own brains from youth, when no one can do it.
