OWC Accelsior S - PCIe-SATA expansion card

The Accelsior S expansion card has appeared in the Other World Computing (OWC) range. It allows you to connect 2,5-inch SATA hard drives and solid-state drives to the PCIe 2.0 x2 bus, that is, it plays the role of a bridge. The board has an Asmedia 1062 controller.

The Accelsior S is said to deliver transfer speeds of up to 550MB/s read and 530MB/s write (actual speeds vary by drive). The product is very easy to install and use because it does not require drivers or other software.

The price of the novelty is about $58. Sales have already begun.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. Sweet lovers are prone to alcoholism 17.07.2013

Studies have shown that there is a direct link between sugar cravings and addiction to alcoholism. In addition, researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine have found, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), that alcoholism is associated with the orbitofrontal region of the brain, which is also responsible for the response to sweet tastes. An analysis of the functioning of this part of the brain can serve as a marker of an increased risk of alcohol dependence.

Previously, scientists have found that animals with an addiction to alcohol prefer to drink sweet water. But a new study has shown that there is an inverse relationship - animals that like sweets drink more alcohol.

Finding a link between sugar cravings and alcohol in humans requires additional factors to be taken into account, but some scientific research already shows that alcoholics or non-alcoholics with a history of alcoholism have a preference for sugary foods.

For the study, scientists chose 12 men and 4 women. All participants in the experiment were young (26 years old) and healthy. Each of them underwent a taste test - they checked their reaction to eating sweet food using MRI. In addition, the scientists learned about the alcohol addiction of the subjects - the amount of alcohol they drank, the frequency of drinking, etc. Thus, the researchers wanted to determine the area of ​​the brain that is responsible for the perception of sweets, and also tried to find out if this brain reaction is similar to the reaction when drinking alcohol.

The trend was that those who drank more alcohol (meaning the amount of alcohol they drank in one evening) had stronger responses to sugary water in the left orbitofrontal region of the brain. In addition, these same people in their subjective assessments noted sweet water as preferable.

Scientists believe that more research is needed on the relationship between sugar preference and alcohol addiction. It is known that addiction to alcohol is caused by several factors, but it is important to find a specific part of the brain that forms a kind of "encouraging" signal. What's more, people's sugar cravings, their brain response to sweets, can serve as a marker for identifying people at risk of developing alcoholism.
