Miniature Tissue Fluid Sensor for Wearable Electronics

Patients who resort to expensive and relatively time-consuming procedures for laboratory analysis of tissue fluid, in the future, will be able to use a wearable device that quickly and painlessly analyzes the balance of electrolytes in body tissues.

Such devices will be useful to athletes involved in sports related to endurance, as well as military personnel, since they can be used to quickly receive data on the physical condition and take the necessary measures in time to improve performance. In the human body, solutions of potassium, calcium, magnesium and other electrolytes play a key role in the passage of nerve impulses that control the work of the heart and other muscles.

The tissue fluid sensor prototype was designed and built by the Sandia National Laboratory. A sensor that can detect the levels of various electrolytes in tissue fluid can be installed in a watch-sized device.

Since a non-invasive method for analyzing tissue fluid cannot be feasible, it is necessary to penetrate into the tissues. In the case of using the new sensor, this task was assigned to microneedles that do not injure the nerves, so the procedure is painless. Because the interstitial fluid is analyzed, the intervention is non-destructive and the transducer is suitable for long-term wear.

The developers believe that such sensors of this type are the future of personalized healthcare. They are confident that the development will definitely reach the commercialization stage.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. British biologists have issued a call: volunteers are urgently needed to monitor the growing population of slugs.

The study by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Newcastle University will last a year and will only focus on slugs, gastropods that lack an outer shell.

To take part in the study, three factors are needed: curiosity, an accessible garden, and a desire to leave the house after dark. Participants of the research project will study different types of slugs and their habitats. They will also count the number of these gastropods and determine what exactly attracts them to the gardens.

The last such study was conducted in English gardens back in the 1940s. Then a large number of slugs were found, which belonged to only nine species.

Researchers need about 60 volunteers who will be trained to find slugs and collect them carefully. Volunteers will need to go out once a month for half an hour with a torch for night hunting. Volunteers will not need any special knowledge. The samples of gastropods they have collected will be sent for analysis to the Royal Horticultural Society.

This study is extremely important in understanding which slugs are most common in British gardens and at what time of the year. Thanks to the data obtained, it will be possible to better understand which species and when exactly cause damage to plants.
