South Korean authorities have required local smartphone manufacturers to equip their electronics with a kill switch ("death button"), which allows you to remotely block the work of a lost or stolen gadget. This initiative has already been followed by Samsung and LG.

The flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S5 is equipped with kill switch technology. LG plans to introduce it into its handsets in the third quarter.

"This will help users protect their data if their phone is lost or stolen," a spokesman for South Korea's Ministry of Science, Creative and Future Planning told The Korea Herald.

Local operators also take care of the protection of the personal data of their customers. Cellular companies sell phones with pre-installed applications, with which users can protect personal information and block access to it by third parties. The issue of introducing a kill switch system at the national level was raised by South Korean authorities in August 2013. In February, the initiative was picked up in California.

According to experts, the "death button" installed in all American phones will save them a total of $ 2,6 billion, which includes the cost of insurance and the purchase of new handsets to replace lost or stolen ones.
