Reliable nuclear battery

19.01.2014

Post-graduate student of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) Dmitry Prokopiev has developed a nuclear battery that can work stably and without recharging for about 12 years and be used in medicine, military equipment and space.

"A 3D gallium arsenide detector is placed in a sealed case filled with tritium, which converts the energy of beta particles emitted by tritium into electric current. A huge number of wells are created in the detector. The total surface of the wells is hundreds of times greater than the area of the detector, and due to this a nuclear battery can be effective," Prokopyev told reporters.

The graduate student noted that nuclear batteries of this type are known, where a silicon detector is used. "But the silicon detector degrades (loses its properties under the influence of radiation) during its use (silicon is not a radiation-resistant material)," the young scientist explained.

Prokopiev added that the power of his battery is much less than conventional batteries, but it can work without recharging for 12 years - this is the half-life of tritium. During this time, a battery with a gallium arsenide detector will retain its parameters, while the parameters of a battery with silicon detectors begin to deteriorate as early as three years after the start of work, the author of the development explained.

Prototypes of detectors, which are the basis of this battery, have been successfully tested at the Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics named after Budker, and at the Siberian Institute of Physics and Technology of Tomsk State University.

Prokopiev noted that such a battery can be used in various electronic devices that consume a small current, but are forced to work without replacing power sources for a decade, for example, in pacemakers.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Transparent adapter for cameras 25.11.2015

Manufacturers of photographic equipment are struggling with the uncontrolled entry of light into the camera and the corresponding consequences in the form of flare, glare and reduced contrast. It is for this purpose that all surfaces are carefully blackened, and lenses are supplied with lens hoods.

Technical Farm is moving in exactly the opposite direction, recently showing an adapter for Sony E-mount cameras. Flare Adapter differs from other similar adapters that allow you to use lenses of other systems with Sony E cameras in that it is made of ... transparent plastic.

This is said to allow for creative effects by allowing additional light to enter the camera. The flow can be adjusted by covering the adapter with your hand or by sticking a light-tight adhesive tape.

The developers showed adapter options for PL and EF lenses, as well as a teleconverter with EF mounts.
