Adaptive phased antenna arrays 09.03.2013

The Pentagon Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched a program to create an adaptive phased array antenna (PAR) ACT (Arrays at Commercial Timescales), which can be used in various projects of the US Department of Defense. According to a DAPRA press release, the new technology will help the Pentagon save billions of dollars and time required to create custom antenna arrays.

According to DARPA spokesman Bill Chappell, the Pentagon is now spending about ten years and tens of billions of dollars on the development of individual phased array antennas. This is because every time engineers have to start creating a phased array from scratch. The presence of a single basic phased array will reduce costs by an average of 30-40%.

DARPA plans to divide the program for the creation of adaptive headlights into three parts. Firstly, management needs to develop a single block of radio frequency gratings, and secondly, a variable electromagnetic interface. Thirdly, the new technology should allow several small phased antenna arrays to be combined into one. Thus, new headlights can, for example, be placed in different parts of an aircraft carrier.

Now phased array antennas are used by the military almost everywhere. In particular, phased arrays are used in radar, communications and electronic warfare. In addition, the presence of an active phased antenna array is a mandatory requirement for fifth-generation fighters, such as the F-35 Lightning II and T-50 (PAK FA).
