Growing liver directly in the human body

07.04.2024

Liver transplantation has become an integral part of medical practice for the treatment of severe diseases of this organ. However, the shortage of donor organs and complications associated with surgery create a need for alternative treatment methods. In this context, LyGenesis has introduced an innovative approach to restoring liver function based on the use of the patient's own cells.

American biotechnology company LyGenesis, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has launched clinical trials of its cell therapy. The first patient with acute liver failure had donor cells injected into a lymph node in the upper abdomen.

The shortage of donor organs for transplantation is a pressing issue both in the United States and around the world. Waiting for a suitable organ can lead to tragic consequences, and alternative treatments are becoming increasingly necessary. The method proposed by LyGenesis aims to create miniature organs in lymph nodes using donor cells.

One of the main advantages of this therapy is the ability to use one donor organ to treat several patients. In addition, this approach allows the use of tissues that were previously considered unsuitable for transplantation.

After successful experiments on animals, the company moved on to clinical trials on humans. The first patient has already been discharged from the hospital and continues to receive the necessary medications under the supervision of doctors. The cells will begin to multiply in the lymph node, forming a structure that can perform the functions of the liver.

According to LyGenesis CEO Michael Hufford, the new liver will be highly vascularized, allowing it to effectively filter blood and maintain vital functions.

Cell therapy offered by LyGenesis represents a revolutionary approach to the treatment of liver failure. If successful, this method will not only reduce the wait for a liver transplant, but will also significantly improve treatment outcomes for many patients facing this difficult problem.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Nubia Red Magic 3 is a smartphone with a fan 03.05.2019

Compact active cooling systems have come to smartphones: the concept of such a device with four coolers is presented by Nubia. A year later, a serial gadget with this technology enters the market - the Nubia Red Magic 3 gaming smartphone.

The Red Magic 3 is powered by Snapdragon 855, has a 90Hz AMOLED screen and a 5000mAh battery. The highlight of the smartphone is an active cooling system with a single fan. The weight of the impeller is about one gram, the maximum rotation speed is 14 thousand revolutions per minute, and the hydrodynamic bearing gives stability and reliability to the whole structure.

According to the manufacturer, the cooler operates almost silently and is not afraid of moisture or dust - certification of protection against external influences complies with the IP55 standard. The brushless electric motor consumes no more than 1% of the battery charge per hour of continuous operation. A lot of attention has been paid to the autonomy of work: thanks to the energy-efficient screen and cooling system, the game time on a single charge is 8,5 hours.

The camera in the new smartphone of the Chinese brand is one, based on the Sony IMX586 sensor with a resolution of 48 megapixels. The screen has a diagonal of 6,6 inches, has pronounced frames at the top and bottom, and on the right side of the device there are two additional keys. Four variants of the Nubia Red Magic 3 have been announced, differing primarily in the amount of RAM and permanent memory, the most expensive of which with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of a flash drive will cost about $640.
