Tired of your own thoughts

11.10.2023

It is known that mental work can cause fatigue no less than physical work. Scientists from the Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris conducted research and, according to them, identified the chemical causes of fatigue associated with mental processes. Experts have suggested that cognitive work leads to chemical changes in the brain.

Scientists believe that mental fatigue is caused by the accumulation of a certain chemical in the brain responsible for regulation. This substance, known as glutamate, is present in the central nervous system of mammals and plays a key role in a variety of processes such as learning, memory and the sleep cycle.

To test their hypothesis, the researchers conducted an experiment. Participants were asked to perform various mental tasks for 6 hours. Half were given simple tasks, and the other half were given more complex ones. Scientists found signs of fatigue only in the group that did more complex tasks.

The researchers used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure biochemical changes in the brain. The results showed a measurable difference in glutamate levels between the group that did the difficult tasks and the group that did the easier ones. According to scientists, increased glutamate levels cause the body to use more resources to maintain brain activity, which in turn leads to increased fatigue.

Thus, it can be said that the more we engage in thinking about complex problems, the more we become tired of our own thoughts.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The harm of music before bed 27.06.2021

Michael Scullin, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, conducted a study on sleep patterns. In his work, Dr. Scullin studied the relationship between music indulgence before bed and the quality of sleep. The main topic for study was the phenomenon of "ear worms": obsessive repetitions of the same melody that "gets stuck" in our head and involuntarily scrolls through the brain over and over again.

Usually we can notice this during the daytime, but Dr. Scullin has proven that the same problem happens to us in our sleep. At the same time, the quality of sleep becomes worse and it does not bring the proper benefit to the body.

The scientist based his conclusions on experiments with volunteers, in which more than two hundred people participated, answering various questions about musical habits and sleep quality. All of these music lovers experienced earworm syndrome.

In addition, fifty volunteers were invited to conduct the experiment at the Neurobiology and Cognitive Research Laboratory at Baylor University. In all participants, scientists tried to induce the effect of "ear worms" in order to empirically evaluate their effect on the quality of sleep. At the same time, the activity of the brain, the work of the body and the quality of sleep were assessed using a polysomnograph.

It turned out that those who were used to listening to tunes and songs for the future to sleep in order to sleep better, constantly suffered from the phenomenon of "ear worms" and experienced problems with sleep. This refutes the common belief that music in the evening helps to fall asleep and sleep better. The brain, even during sleep, does not stop analyzing the data obtained while listening to music, which reduces the quality of rest.
