Chinese children will be limited in the use of gadgets

28.07.2023

The government of the People's Republic of China continues to impose strict restrictions on the use of digital devices among teenagers. Whereas in 2021 the country limited gaming time for under-18s to just 3 hours a week, a new initiative is now being discussed regarding even tighter restrictions on smartphone use, based on information received from Mezha Media.

China's Cyberspace Authority has put forward a draft regulation that recommends that teenagers under 18 limit smartphone use to just two hours a day. For the age group from 8 to 15 years, the limit is one hour per day, while for children under eight, a limit of 40 minutes is assumed.

In addition, the new rules also propose a ban on the use of smartphones between 22:00 and 6:00. Every mobile phone must be equipped with a parental control mode that will allow parents to control their children's access to certain content, as well as give ISPs the ability to provide age-appropriate content. The youngest, children under three, will be subject to the restriction on audio content such as songs and other audio formats, while children aged 12 and over will be able to access educational and news content.

Although the project is under discussion and its final approval is still unknown, it should be remembered that this concerns the PRC, and the likelihood of these measures being implemented is quite high. Questions arise regarding the mechanisms for implementing these restrictions. It is not yet clear whether the responsibility for providing child mode will lie with hardware manufacturers or operating system developers.

If these restrictions are implemented, then Chinese software developers such as ByteDance (creators of TikTok and its Chinese version of Douyin) and Tencent (WeChat and many other popular games) will have to adapt their applications and content to the new standards.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Ink that changes colors 16.09.2019

The color of any item, which is logical, is selected and set during its production. And if we need to change the color, then we just need to take the paint and manually repaint what we need. However, American engineers from MIT have developed a system that allows objects to be repainted many times by irradiation with light waves. They created a special mixture that can be applied to an object, and then, using a series of manipulations, set the desired color to the object. Moreover, the color can be easily changed in the future.

For quite a long time there have been so-called photochromic materials that change their color under the influence of light irradiation. The skin of chameleons is similarly arranged. However, if chameleons can retain their color for a long time due to physiological characteristics, then photochromic materials retain their changed state only when exposed to radiation. That is, as soon as the photochromic material "stop shining", the color of the object will return to its original state.

However, in 2018, a group of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) learned how to print objects on a 3D printer, the color of which can be changed using ultraviolet or visible light. There was only one drawback to this development - the item must initially be created from a new material. For more than a year, experts have been working to create an ink based on their developments that can be used to paint any object.

MIT scientists have created a solution containing three dyes: cyan, magenta and yellow. Each dye has photochromic properties and is activated by visible light of a specific wavelength. The solution can be applied to any object in any convenient way: using a sprayer, paint with a brush, and so on. After that, the object must be placed on a rotating platform, on which a special emitter shines.

Repainting takes place in two stages. First, the object to be painted is illuminated with ultraviolet light, due to which all dyes are activated. After that, the emitter begins to shine on the object with waves of different lengths, due to which each of the three colors (depending on the intensity and duration of the radiation) acquires a certain shade. If the object needs to be repainted, the whole process should be repeated: first, "discolor" everything with ultraviolet light and then, by setting new parameters, give the object new colors.
