edible battery

12.04.2023

Scientists continue to develop electronics that can safely monitor and heal our health inside the body. Unfortunately, powering these tiny medical gadgets isn't always easy.

Now there is a new type of battery that can help in this department. Made from completely edible substances, it can safely dissolve in the stomach, doing whatever it needs.

The prototype device, developed by molecular electronics experts at the Italian Institute of Technology, operates at a harmless voltage of 0,65 volts and delivers 48 microamps for 12 minutes, in the range needed to power tiny electronics.

Made from a varied list of ingredients, this is the first functional rechargeable battery to be served as a snack. Its ingredients include the vitamin riboflavin for the battery's anode (its "negative" end) and the addition of quercetin as the cathode ("positive" end). The electrolyte (which generates electrical charge) is made from a water-based solution, and the separator (which prevents short circuits) is made from burrow, seaweed found in sushi restaurants.

Activated charcoal, often used to treat poisoning, is included to increase electrical conductivity, while the outer contacts that transmit electricity to another device are made from beeswax combined with food-grade decorative gold.

The battery retains its charge for dozens of cycles, although it must be outside the case to charge. The prototype created here is roughly a square centimeter (0,155 square inches), but the team is already working on making it smaller.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Navigation system for firefighters 26.01.2021

Every year, hundreds of firefighters die worldwide, and tens of thousands are injured and maimed. One of the main reasons for such sad statistics is thick smoke. With heavy smoke, people risk getting lost and trapped. To remedy the situation, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Science and Technology has teamed up with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to create a new navigation technology. The development allows you to more accurately determine the location of people in burning buildings.

The transmitters and the POINTER command station were deployed in a 5-storey building with an area of about 750 square meters. The design imitated a residential five-story building. The command station tracked the movement of transmitters inside the building at a distance of up to 70 meters.

The POINTER system was able to accurately locate the transmitters to within 1 meter in XNUMXD space. But in most cases, the error was several tens of centimeters. The transmitter itself is a device the size and weight of a conventional mobile phone.

Many existing tracking technologies use GPS, Ultra-Wideband, or other identification methods that depend solely on the location of the radio unit. The effectiveness of such systems is greatly reduced indoors.

POINTER works in a completely different way. The system uses magneto-quasi-static fields for orientation in three-dimensional space and tracking beacons with an accuracy of up to a meter. High accuracy is especially important in heavy smoke conditions. It not only allows for better real-time coordination, but also saves valuable time when a person is injured or lost.

The launch of the POINTER system is scheduled for 2022.
