NASA's hypersonic plane set a speed record

16.03.2023

The United States has long been a leader in the development of the fastest aircraft. In the late 1990s, the NASA X-43 was developed as part of the Hyper-X program. As part of the space agency's "better, faster, cheaper" program, Hyper-X used National Aerospace Plane technology.

The purpose of the Hyper-X project was to test the key power plants and related technologies of hypersonic aircraft in flight. The first two X-43 test machines were designed to fly at a speed of Mach 7, which is the highest speed for a jet aircraft. At that time, the third X-43 was able to reach a speed of Mach 9,6.

To understand the significance of this achievement, the highest speed achieved by the NASA X-15 rocket plane during flight tests in the late 1960s was Mach 6,7.

The test aircraft X-43A was an unmanned vehicle, 3,7 meters long. Ego's unique lifting body design provided significant lift for flight instead of relying on the wings. The weight of the plane was about 1400 kg.

In addition, this test aircraft was designed in such a way that it could be fully controlled in high-speed flight, even if the engine was turned off. However, the plane was not intended for landing and recovery. After completing the test flight, it fell into the Pacific Ocean.

Testing of the X-43A began in 2001, but the first flight ended in failure when the Pegasus booster lost control 13 seconds after separation from the B-52 mother ship. However, a second attempt in 2004 was successful and the aircraft reached Mach 6,83 (7456 km/h). The third prototype, which took off on November 16, 2004, set a speed record of Mach 9,64 (10240,26 km/h) at an altitude of about 33 meters.

In the original concept of the X-43 program, the creation of two additional machines was assumed. The X-43B was supposed to be used to demonstrate an engine capable of operating in several modes. The X-43B engine was supposed to work as a conventional turbojet engine at low altitudes and switch to the GPRD mode at high altitudes and speeds.

Flights of the X-43B were scheduled for 2009 after testing of another Hyper-X machine, the X-43C, which was supposed to demonstrate the operation of a scramjet on solid carbon fuel at speeds from Mach 5 to Mach 7, was completed. However, the flights were canceled in March 2004 due to a change in NASA strategy following the announcement of the "Presidential Vision for Space Exploration" in January of that year. Although funding for the X-43C continued under NASA's 2005 budget, the program was soon put on hold. However, tests of the hypersonic aircraft continued under the X-51 program, which began in 2005 and first flew in 2010.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Heated car seats - per subscription 13.07.2020

The BMW Group intends to offer its customers part of the options for time-based rental.

The new version of proprietary Operating System 7 software for the latest BMW models will allow German car buyers to expand the functionality of their cars by subscribing to individual options and functions. The BMW Group explained that a number of car features are included in the software of all manufactured cars, but not all buyers are ready to pay for the option at the time of purchasing the car.

If, after buying a BMW, the owner realizes that he needs some kind of equipment, he will be able to issue a paid subscription (it is stated that it is possible to get options for 1 or 3 years, as well as "redeem" the desired function forever), after which the Operating System update will be downloaded via the Internet 7, which unlocks a new option. At the same time, a demo period of one month is provided, when it will be possible to try the option for free.

Among the features of the subscription in BMW are the activation of intelligent cruise control, the automatic high beam system, the built-in BMW Driver Recorder dash cam, the BMW IconicSounds Sport signature soundtrack, developed by composer Hans Zimmer for the brand's electric vehicles, heated seats, and active suspension. The company emphasized that the list of available options will depend on the markets where BMW models are presented.
