Amazon has unveiled a smart picking robot set to revolutionize the warehouse workspace. The novelty uses AI to recognize objects in the warehouse, sort and process them.

Sparrow boasts computer vision that allows it to analyze products in stock. The presence of artificial intelligence ensures the performance of various manipulations with goods. One robotic mechanism can replace several people at once.

At the same time, safety precautions in places where people and robots work together are not always observed. According to experts from the Center for Investigative Journalism, in the three years preceding the coronavirus hysteria (2016-19), the injury rate at Amazon automated enterprises was 50% higher than that in workshops using exclusively human labor.

After the publication of the corresponding report, representatives of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration visited Amazon with a comprehensive check.

The advent of the Sparrow robot will bring the online sales giant closer to the previously announced "full automation" of the workspace and get rid of strikes and strikes by staff.

Metal and glass welding 02.03.2019

Scientists from Heriot-Watt University have welded glass and metal together using an ultra-fast laser system - a real revolution in the industry!

Thanks to the Heriot-Watt specialists' new laser system, various optical materials such as quartz, borosilicate glass and even sapphire have been successfully welded to metals such as aluminum, titanium and stainless steel. The equipment delivers very short (picosecond) pulses of infrared light at the junction of materials, which helps to effectively fuse them together. Scientists have already noted the enormous potential of such welding for the entire production base of the near future. This process could find applications in aerospace, defense, optical, and even health care.

Professor Duncan Hand, director of the EPSRC Manufacturing Innovation Center at Heriot-Watt University, explains that traditionally dissimilar materials are very difficult to weld together due to their different melting points. High temperatures and structural changes due to thermal expansion lead to the destruction of brittle materials such as glass.

“Currently, equipment and products that use glass and metal most often hold these two materials together with glue. It is unreliable, because over time the glued parts begin to spread in different directions. In addition, the organic components of the glue emit volatile compounds, which also negatively impacts the life of the product," says Hand.

In his own technique, the whole process is based on incredibly short laser pulses. Each pulse lasts only a few picoseconds.

"To understand how small it is - compare an ordinary second with a time interval of 30 years!" he explains.

The parts to be welded are placed in close contact and the laser is focused through the optics to provide a small area of ​​effect and high intensity at the joint boundary. So, during the tests, the peak power was one megawatt - and this is on an area of ​​\u50b\u90bjust a few microns. This is how a microplasma, a tiny sphere-lightning, arises inside the melt region, which fuses the materials. The seams have been tested for strength from -XNUMX°C to XNUMX° and come out unscathed - a great guarantee that they will not fail in extreme environments such as outer space.
