Food is like a drug

14.11.2022

Donuts, pizza, cereals, sodas - all these foods are very tasty and also dangerous for our health. In a new study, scientists came to the conclusion that ultra-processed foods can be safely put on a par with drugs and cigarettes - they harm the body and cause addiction.

A team of researchers led by University of Michigan psychology professor Ashley Giergardt, PhD, concluded that ultra-processed foods, which include chips, baked goods, candies, cereals, donuts, sodas and more, contain a huge amount of artificial flavors, canned food.

All this makes them very tasty, but also high in calories, fat, sugar or salt, which increases the risk of obesity or the development of other diseases. As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that all this makes the "flavors" more like drugs, because they, in fact, are far from natural in texture and taste.

According to Alexandra Difelicantoni, Professor of Health Behavior Research at Virginia Tech University, all of these foods were perfectly designed to deliver sugar and fat to our bodies. In addition, they are addictive, along with cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.

Studies show that in the United States, for example, such products make up about 50% of the total diet of local residents. They also cause obesity, make people more at risk of developing cancers such as colorectal and kidney cancer, Alzheimer's disease and others. Regular consumption of such foods will lead to an increase in blood sugar levels, which will result in diabetes.

Earlier in September, scientists published startling results from a study showing a worldwide rise in rates of early breast, pancreatic, and colon cancers - these foods were the culprit. In addition, Brazilian researchers concluded that one in five premature deaths in this country is also associated with processed foods.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Toxic substances from polluted air enter the brain 22.09.2016

In May of this year, the World Health Organization published a report stating that between 2008 and 2013. the level of air pollution with fine particles of sulfate, nitrate and black carbon increased by 8%. These particles penetrate deeply into the lungs and cardiovascular system of a person and cause damage to health.

A new study by British scientists from the University of Lancaster has shown that particles from the air also enter the brain. The researchers analyzed brain tissue samples from 29 people who lived and died in Mexico City, one of the most polluted cities in the world, and 8 people who lived and died in Manchester, and found in the samples magnetite nanospheres - a mineral from the class of oxides - with a diameter of 200 nanometers. Magnetite particles can form naturally in the brain in small amounts, but they are usually irregular in shape with sharp corners.

The particles, discovered by scientists, differed from natural ones. There were more of them, and they were round in shape with a smooth surface, which is a sign of their origin in high temperature conditions - for example, in a car engine or in a braking system. In addition, crystal grains were located on their surface, which appeared as a result of the reaction with platinum in the catalytic converter. For every natural particle of magnetite in the brain, there were about 100 particles from polluted air.

Scientists suggest that iron oxide, when accumulated in the brain, may contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, since similar particles were previously found in amyloid plaques in the brain that appear in Alzheimer's disease. However, there is no direct link yet, and further research is required regarding the need for brainwashing to get rid of magnetite. Moreover, to prevent Alzheimer's disease, you can start with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle, as well as quit smoking.
