Smart pillow

08.06.2022

Chinese scientists have developed a self-powered "smart" pillow that will better understand the causes of lack of sleep, as well as track patients with diseases that affect head movement.

Research has linked chronic sleep deprivation to diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as mental health problems. People who want to better understand what happens to them at night can take a sleep test at a medical institution, or use an application for a smartphone or smart watch. As a more accurate alternative to the second method, scientists are developing new sleep monitoring systems using triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) - a constant current source. These self-contained systems have already taken the form of eye masks, belts, patches and even sheets. And now the shape of the pillow.

To design a new "smart" pillow, the researchers developed a flexible porous polymer triboelectric layer. Movement between the head and this layer changes the electric field around nearby electrodes, generating a current. They connected several of these self-powered sensors to create a flexible and breathable array that can be placed on a regular pillow. This system could generate a voltage corresponding to the amount of pressure applied and could track the movement of a finger as it traced letters. It can also record the distribution of head pressure on the pillow when changing position.

The development can be used for more than just sleep tracking. For example, the system could track patients with diseases that affect head movement, such as degenerative neck disease, cervical spondylosis.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Updated line of SSD Mushkin 14.01.2019

Mushkin has introduced an updated line of solid state drives.

The list of new products opens with the flagship M.2 2280 Pilot-E drive, built with the Silicon Motion SM2262EN controller and Micron's 64-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory. It is equipped with a PCIe x4 interface and supports the NVMe 1.3 protocol. The device demonstrates sequential read and write speeds up to 3300 MB / s and 2500 MB / s, respectively. These SSDs will be available in sizes ranging from 250GB to 2TB.

The Helix-L model also supports NVMe, but this model uses a Silicon Motion SM2263XT controller without DRAM cache and Micron's 96-layer 3D TLC NAND flash. This 250, 500 and 1TB model offers read speeds up to 1700MB/s and write speeds up to 1500MB/s. According to the manufacturer, it will be cheaper.

The Mushkin Source 2 is equipped with a SATA 6Gb/s interface. It uses a Silicon Motion SM2259 controller and Micron's 96-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory. For this model, the maximum sequential read and write speeds of 560 MB / s and 520 MB / s, respectively, are declared. It will be available in the second quarter of 2019 in 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB variants.

The Carbon external drive enclosure houses an SSD on a Silicon Motion SM2263XT controller. This 500 GB or 1 TB device uses 3D TLC NAND flash memory and connects to the host using a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, the signals of which are output to the USB Type-C connector. The data transfer rate reaches 1000 MB / s, the performance is 115 IOPS (read) and 000 IOPS (write).

The Carbon Z100 is also made external, but equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 interface. It uses a Silicon Motion SM2262EN controller and 250 GB to 2 TB of 64-layer TLC NAND flash memory. The sequential read speed reaches 2210 MB / s, sequential write - 1355 MB / s. The maximum performance is 263 and 000 IOPS, respectively.
