Thousands of molecules combined into a single quantum state

04.05.2021

The concept of many particles acting together as one big particle, sharing their quantum states, is not new. Scientists at the University of Chicago have been experimenting with clouds of individual atoms in a state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate.

These clouds are formed from atoms cooled to a fraction above absolute zero (but not to absolute zero when the atoms stop moving). This causes them to descend to their lowest energy state, moving extremely slowly so that their energy differences disappear, causing them to overlap in a quantum superposition.

The result is a high-density cloud of atoms that acts as a single "superatom" or material wave. Molecules, however, are made up of many atoms bonded together and are therefore much more difficult to tame.

They then cooled the condensate even further and increased the magnetic field so that about 15 percent of the cesium atoms collided and bonded in pairs to form dekesium molecules. Unbound atoms were ejected from the trap and a magnetic field gradient was applied to levitate and hold the remaining molecules in a two-dimensional configuration.

The resulting gas consisted of molecules that, as scientists found out, were in the same quantum state, with the same spins, orientation and vibration.

Not only for the molecular condensate itself, but also for the transition between atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates. Learning how this works will help scientists streamline the process so that we can create condensates with other molecules that may be easier to maintain or more efficient for various technological applications.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

AnkerMake M3 5D printer 10.04.2022

Anker, known as a manufacturer of chargers, has taken up the manufacture of 3D printers. The company announced a separate brand for AnkerMake 3D printing products and the first model of the AnkerMake M3 5D printer.

According to the manufacturer, this novelty solves the most important problems that prevented 3D printers from becoming mainstream devices, including their usually slow print speed. The AnkerMake M5 has a base print speed of 250mm/s for detailed designs that require precision workmanship.

However, the printer also has a much faster mode, allowing you to print at speeds up to 2500mm/s. Although in this case the end result will be coarser and less detailed. This mode is mainly suitable for prototypes and some toys. However, Anker claims that this mode allows the M5 to cut average print times by up to 70% compared to other 3D printers.

Additionally, the AnkerMake M5 is designed with ease of use in mind. It only takes 15 minutes to get ready to start printing. In addition, the developers have eliminated another problematic aspect of 3D printers - the need for constant monitoring.

The M5 has the ability to control the print job with a built-in AI camera. If it detects any problems, such as a clogged nozzle, the system can send an alert to the user's smartphone. And through the Anker mobile app, you can remotely view live print jobs.
