Sheet organic glass [1], like any thermoplastic plastic, can be bent at any angle. The known method involves heating along the bending line of a flat capacitor foil, heated by the current passing through it from the filament winding (5 ... 6,3 V) of any old (tube) network transformer of a TV, radio, etc.

This method is effective, but has one significant drawback - it is dangerous (organic glass is highly flammable!). Local overheating is sufficient, not only the surface of the plexiglass will be damaged, which is also significant, but a fire will also be set up. By the way, the burning of plexiglass can be stopped only if the access of oxygen is blocked, for example, with a rug.

You can confidently avoid a fire if you place the foil in a fluoroplastic tube along the entire length of the foil in contact with the plexiglass. Before pulling the foil into a fluoroplastic tube, for example, using a hard wire, the tube is flattened, ironed with a very hot iron on a flat surface (table) covered with a sheet of fluoroplast. Fluoroplastic softens only at a temperature of approximately 400 ° C, it can be ironed directly with an iron without fear of damage.

Foil, not wire, is used in order to provide a large heating area for plexiglass at the bend. It may not necessarily be aluminum, but copper, thin and flexible, so that you can easily cut a strip of the same width and the required length. A rheostat is needed to regulate the heating. You can do without a rheostat if you use 6..12 V car battery banks for warming up. Then the current can be adjusted by the number of connected battery cans.

A specially prepared wooden lath is used as a template for the required bending angle. You also need a flat wooden rail or ruler to support the heated part of the sheet so as not to get burned. The plexiglass sheet is placed on the table so that part of it, hanging, recedes by the intended bending line from the edge of the table by 1 cm. The foil in the fluoroplastic tube is laid along the bending line, covering the plexiglass sheet from above and below, slightly stretched. Heating is connected and regulated. When the plexiglass sheet becomes plastic (begins to bend under its own weight), we put on top the stencil of the bending angle along the line and bend the plexiglass sheet with a flat rail applied to the sheet from below so that the upward movement force is evenly distributed along the bend line. We hold the slats until the plexiglass has completely cooled. To bend other thermoplastic plastics (viniplast, etc.), you should choose the heating temperature, in all cases, practice, since bending is done vigorously, dexterously, so that the place of heating does not have time to cool.

The fluoroplastic tube allows not only to avoid fire, but also to exclude damage to the plastic at the bend, and preserves its appearance.

Thermoplastic welding. Thin sheet thermoplastic plastics can be welded with the edge of a hot iron through a fluoroplastic film 0,2 ... 0,5 mm thick. To do this, two sheets of polyethylene (polyvinyl chloride) are placed on the edge of the table covered with a strip of such fluoroplast, covered with a second strip of fluoroplast and slowly ironed with pressure so that the edge of the iron falls just along the intended welding line. If welding did not work out once, increase the heating of the iron, repeat.

Thus, the author "dressed" the binders of the magazines "Radio" and "Radioamateur" in plastic covers from old stationery "cases", repairing their open seams or changing the size to fit the magazine. The welded sections are cut after the welding has cooled, leaving a seam 5 mm wide.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
