Currently, various devices for protecting household appliances from high and low voltage in the 220 V network have appeared on the radio markets.

Unfortunately, all of them have significant drawbacks: low speed where the load is switched using a relay, no turn-on delay after operation due to a power surge (which is very important especially for switching power supplies of modern TVs and old-type refrigerators), limitation on switched load power.

Fast surge protection
Fig. 1

The proposed protection device (Fig. 1) is devoid of these shortcomings and works as follows. When the mains voltage goes beyond the set limits (the lower limit is regulated by resistor R4, the upper limit is R6), the timer DD2 is triggered and a low level is set at its output 3, the green LED VD6 goes out, the triac TC 106 disconnects the load. A low level at output 7 of the DD2 timer enables the operation of the DD1 K176IE5 counter, which essentially acts as a second timer that generates the delay time to turn on the load. This time depends on the ratings of R14 and C6 and, when indicated in the diagram, is about 4 minutes.

Fast surge protection
Fig. 2

After 4 minutes, a very short reset pulse of the DD5 timer passes through the differential circuit C15 R2 and T2 and, if the mains voltage returns to normal, a high level is set at pin 3 of the timer, the green LED lights up and the VD10 TC106 triac connects the load. Otherwise, another 4 minutes will pass and everything will repeat itself, and this will happen until the voltage in the network returns to normal.

The red LED VD7 indicates the operation of the timer on DD1 and, if everything is fine, should flash every 2-3 seconds.

There are no special requirements for details, with the exception of: R2 - power of at least 1 W, SZ - with a low leakage current. Optosimistor VD9 MOS 3022 can be replaced with MOS 3020-3062. Capacitor C1 - at least 400 V.

Through the TS-106 triac, you can switch a load of up to 10 A with an appropriate radiator, and if more current is needed, then you need to replace it with a more powerful one (for example, TS-132).

This protection is designed for round-the-clock operation and is only afraid of a short circuit at the output.

When you first turn on through protection, the load will be connected after 4 minutes, then - automatic operation.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Volvo self-driving trucks for sugarcane harvesting 12.06.2017

In the cultivation of sugar cane, it is important not only to grow a large crop, but also to properly organize its collection so that when the product is taken out of the fields, it does not damage the soil and young plants, which will become the basis of the next year's crop.

Volvo Trucks has developed a self-driving truck that is expected to help increase the sugarcane harvest in Brazil. The truck will be used to transport the newly harvested sugar cane. Controlled by the autopilot system, it adheres to the set course with great accuracy, which helps to protect the cane sprouts from damage.

The system predominantly controls the steering using two gyroscopes to prevent the vehicle from deviating more than an inch (25 mm) from its set course. The GPS navigation system is used to track the route through the field, and the driver can set a constant speed with the help, slowing down or accelerating as necessary.

Currently, about 4% of the crop is lost due to damage to sugarcane sprouts, as well as due to soil compaction when vehicles move across the field. The use of autonomous trucks will avoid significant damage to soil and crops, increasing yields of up to 10 tons of sugar cane per hectare per year.
