It's no secret that at a distance of 100 km or more from Moscow, the ether on the ultrashort waves (VHF) and medium waves (MW) bands noticeably "empty", and at a distance of 300 ... 400 km there is practically no reception (if there is no regional center). This observation corresponds to the conditions for the propagation of radio waves in the indicated ranges. VHF stations are confidently audible in the line of sight, regardless of the time of day.

Broadcasting on SW during the daytime uses surface radio waves, the field strength of which depends on the transmitter power, operating frequency, and parameters of the earth's surface. For example, the strength of the radio wave field over land with a transmitter power of 500 kW and an operating frequency of 1 MHz at a distance of 400 km will not exceed 100 μV/m. At the same time, the sensitivity of even a good radio receiver with a magnetic antenna is usually on the order of 500 µV/m.

Low power radio reception

You can increase the sensitivity of a receiving device with a ferrite antenna using the traditional method by connecting an external antenna. If such an antenna is not available, a simple and small-sized design can be made.

For these purposes, I made the loop antenna shown in the figure with dimensions of 40x40 cm. The oscillatory circuit, composed of the capacitance and inductance of the antenna, an additional KPI, covers the entire medium-wave broadcasting range. The experiments were carried out in a rural area at a distance of 400 km from Moscow in a southeasterly direction.

Having placed the receiver inside the loop antenna as shown in the figure, tune the KPI loop antenna into resonance at the frequency of the received station and orient it in the desired direction. With this simple improvement, it was possible to receive more than a dozen radio stations from Moscow during the daytime at frequencies 549, 612, 693 *. 810*. 873, 963*, 1044, 1116*. 1260*. 1305 and 1440 * kHz with different volume levels and several regional broadcasting stations at frequencies of 774 kHz - Voronezh, 855 kHz - Penza, 567 kHz - Volgograd, 1080 kHz - Saransk, 531 kHz - Cheboksary. The asterisks mark the frequencies of low-power (up to 5 kW) transmitters.

The effectiveness of the applied loop antenna can be estimated quite accurately if, according to the graphs [1] of the dependence of the earth wave field strength on the distance when propagating over land, the field strength of a transmitter with a power of 5 kW at a frequency of 1 MHz at a distance of 400 km is determined. Its value will be 7 μV / m. The sensitivity of the used receivers GRUNDIG OCEAN BOY350 and the domestic Sokol 403 is approximately 500 μV / m.

In the manufacture of a loop antenna, the author was guided by the recommendations set forth in [2]. The antenna is a wooden frame measuring 40x40x5 cm, on which ten cuts must be made in 4 mm increments to wind the wire. It is necessary to wind 10 turns of the PEV-1 winding wire with a diameter of 0,6-0,8 mm in increments of 4 mm onto the frame, connect two KPE sections connected in parallel from the Ocean radio receiver to the ends of the windings.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Paper bike helmet 29.11.2016

The invention of the American designer Isis Shiffer (Isis Shiffer) called EcoHelmet ("Ekohelmet") is a folding bicycle helmet made of several layers of cardboard. The layers are arranged in the form of an accordion, resembling a honeycomb, and this structure allowed the helmet to withstand the impact of a 5-kilogram object that fell from a height of a meter in tests. To protect against water, the helmet is covered with a biodegradable material like wax.

Attempts to create inexpensive paper helmets have been made before. Three years ago, for example, London-based designers from the Royal College of Art introduced the Paper Pulp Helmet, a disposable paper pulp helmet for bicycle rentals. And a year earlier, another London-based designer, Anirudha Surabhi, showed off the Kranium paper helmet, also using a honeycomb structure. But both of these designs were not widely adopted.

EcoHelmet, on which its author has been working for a year and a half, has every chance of becoming a successful commercial product. Firstly, its cost will be no more than $5. Secondly, a folding helmet can be sold through vending machines. Thirdly, the £30 prize enabled Schiffer to recruit manufacturing and marketing experts and begin additional testing for certification. Fourth, the paper from which the helmet is made will be easily recycled, which will relieve additional headaches for conservationists.
