3.2.10. On an arc furnace, the performance characteristics for all secondary voltage stages and inductor reactance stages should be empirically measured. If there are several electric furnaces with the same parameters in the workshop, the characteristics are determined on one of them.

3.2.11. During the loading period of electric furnaces, it is necessary to ensure that the hot ends of the electrodes are under the roof of the electric furnace.

3.2.12. On installations of arc steel-smelting furnaces, the setting of the current protection against overload must be consistent with the operation of the automatic regulator of the electric mode. During operation, short circuits must be eliminated by an automatic regulator, and only in cases where the movement of the electrodes cannot quickly eliminate the short circuit, overload protection should work.

3.2.13. The setting of the automatic controller of the electric mode should provide the optimal mode of operation of the electric arc furnace. Regulator settings should be checked periodically.

The scope and timing of inspections of automatic regulators are determined by local instructions, drawn up taking into account the manufacturer’s operating instructions and local conditions. Full inspections of automatic regulators should be carried out at least once a year.

3.2.14. The contact connections of the short network of the current conductor and electrical holders must be subject to periodic inspection at least once every six months.

In order to reduce power losses in the electrode contacts, it is necessary to ensure the high quality of their ends and nipple connections and the tight coiling of the electrodes.

3.2.15. Quality control of oil in the transformer and oil circuit breakers, testing of oil for dielectric strength, checking of contacts in switches, transformers and oil circuit breakers is carried out within the time limits established by the Consumer's electrical equipment manager, but not less than it is provided for by these Rules for general electrical installations.

3.2.16. All work on preparation for smelting at electroslag remelting plants is carried out only with the transformer turned off. In cases where one transformer alternately powers two electroslag installations, special instructions must be developed for the safe preparation of the second installation when the first one is turned on. The list of these electrical installations must be approved by the Consumer's manager, and the instructions must be brought to the attention of the personnel.

3.2.17. Electric arc furnaces must be equipped with devices that do not allow deteriorating the quality of electricity at the border determined by the power supply agreement.

The operation of electric arc furnaces without filter compensating devices is not allowed.

3.2.18. Work on bypassing, extending and replacing electrodes on an arc steel-smelting furnace, as well as sealing electrode holes must be carried out with the electric furnace switched off.

Bypass and build-up of stuffed self-sintering electrodes of ore-thermal furnaces, welding of a brake band and loading with electrode mass can be carried out without removing the voltage in electrical installations up to 1000 V. These works must be carried out from isolated working (bypass) platforms with interphase dividing insulating partitions.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Implant LEDs Control Brain Functions 21.04.2013

Scientists at St. Louis University and the University of Illinois have developed microscopic LEDs thinner than a human hair.

These LEDs can be implanted anywhere on the body using a standard thin medical needle. The essence of the experiment is as follows: first, genetic engineers modified mice using optogenetics technology, that is, they “taught” brain neurons to turn on and off according to a light signal created by a tiny LED. Then, an LED was implanted closer to these neurons. Turning on the LED activates the neurons, and turning it off, on the contrary, deactivates them. In this way, specific brain functions can be controlled.

With the help of a miniature LED and optogenetics, scientists were able to control the reward system: due to the inclusion of certain neurons, dopamine was released, causing a feeling of satisfaction.

The researchers believe that LED implants, which are made on the basis of printed electronics, will be useful in other neurological studies. Today, similar devices are already used to stimulate peripheral nerves, which reduces or completely disables pain. True, until now it was necessary to use thin optical fibers and laser emitters, which limited the possibilities of optogenetics.

Wireless LED implants offer much more flexibility. Moreover, devices with LEDs of several colors are able to activate and control several neural circuits at the same time. In addition to LEDs, tiny sensors can be added to the implants to take readings of temperature and electrical activity in the brain. The new LED technology is arguably one of the most important advances in neuroscience. It will help you better understand what happens to the brain as a result of disorders such as stress, depression and anxiety. In addition, the control of neural networks can effectively treat these conditions, relieve pain and fear.

Pessimists also have a topic for discussion: such a powerful artificial incentive mechanism can turn anyone into a slave, because today the feeling of satisfaction is realized by much more complex things, such as relationships, purchases, domestic comfort, career, power, creative achievements, etc. In a society of "chip" people, such "difficulties" are not needed.
