By including a varistor in the AGC of the communication receiver, you can increase the stability of the output signal. The varistor together with a fixed resistor form an adjustable voltage divider, which is connected between the RF amplifier and the AGC detector.

This improvement improves the efficiency of the AGC, since the part of the AGC voltage supplied to the controlled RF amplifier varies in proportion to the level of the input signal. Moreover, at low signal levels, this part is negligible, and the amplifier operates at maximum gain, providing the best signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, a varistor AGC has the property of a delayed AGC (or AGC with manual switching), but unlike the latter, it has a continuous control characteristic.

Receiver AGC Improvement with a Varistor

At the maximum AGC voltage (which corresponds to a strong signal), a significant part of it falls on the resistor R1, since the varistor has a low resistance. In this case, the receiver gain is minimal. At the maximum AGC voltage (weak signal), the resistance of the varistor is large, as a result of which a small part of the AGC voltage goes to the resistor R1, and the gain decreases slightly.

The choice of varistor and resistor is made in such a way that at the maximum AGC voltage (highest expected signal) the resistance of the varistor would be half the resistance of the resistor. This condition corresponds to the optimal regulation of the output signal in the range of input signals 1-1000 mV and provides the best signal-to-noise ratio for signals less than 10 μV (due to almost complete shutdown of the AGC circuit).

Specific resistances of the varistor and resistor are selected depending on the signal level at the output of the AGC detector. As a rule, the resistance of the resistor R1 is about 2 MΩ for tube and 100 kΩ for transistor receivers. The time constant of the AGC filter, consisting of a varistor, a resistor and a capacitor C1, changes with the signal level, so the capacitance of the capacitor necessary to filter the modulation components is selected when the varistor resistance is half that of the resistor.

Using an AGC with a varistor in all control stages of a transistor receiver, including an RF amplifier, it is possible to improve sensitivity by 3 dB, reduce receiver input voltage variations by a factor of two for a given change in input level, and increase the absolute value of the output signal by 8-12 dB.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Kilometer solar power plant above the factory conveyor belt 26.04.2023

Sinn Power, a German startup specializing in floating photovoltaics, and French solar module manufacturer Recom have deployed a 1km solar array on a conveyor belt at a gravel plant in Bavaria, Germany.

Recom supplied 1760 double-sided heterojunction modules for the project, each with an output power of 470 watts. The array has a total power of 850 kW and generates 877 watts per m2.

Sinn Power designed and provided the aluminum mounting structure for the project. The aluminum structure can be used with conveyor belts up to 2,5 m high and rests on concrete bases. Each mounting structure is 5,5 m long and can accommodate up to 10 solar modules. It has a wind load of 27,5 m/s (99 km/h) (WLZ3) and a snow load of 2,06 kN/m2. The mounting structure can be attached to an existing conveyor belt structure using a clamping system.

Recom stated that the conveyor belt photovoltaic system is designed in accordance with Eurocode 1DIN1991-1-3 and Eurocode DIN1991-1, and that the structural stability of the system is verified using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis.

The companies say this innovative solution maximizes profitability by directly supplying power to the conveyor belt where it is needed without sacrificing performance. The aluminum construction is durable and can withstand the environment while being easy to transport and install.
