The low-current charger circuit is required, in particular, for miniature computers of various types and systems. In this case, the charger should be assembled only on elements intended for surface mounting, and occupy a minimum area on the printed circuit board.

The circuit shown in the figure, using the LTC1174, satisfies both requirements. The LTC1174 is a stabilized buck switching voltage converter operating in current mode. The power switch is a built-in low-loss p-channel high power MOSFET.

In this circuit, the charge current is set to 600 mA. The average charging current depends on the inductance of the inductor and the operating voltage of the battery, according to the formula shown in the figure.

The divider resistor values in the voltage feedback circuit correspond to an output level of 7 V. For nickel-cadmium cells, the value is 1,2 V, when discharged - 0,9 V, and when fully charged - 1,5 V. Therefore, on the battery of four nickel-cadmium battery cells can be from 3,6 to 6 V, depending on the degree of charge or discharge. When such a battery is connected to the charger, its output voltage drops below 7V, and the LTC1174 goes into current limiting mode at about 300mA if the inductor inductance is 50µH, according to the above formula.

Diode D2 prevents the battery from discharging through the divider circuit when the charger turns off when the SHUTDOWN pin is driven low. In the off state, the charger draws less than 10µA of its own current from the power supply.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Self-destructing Overdrive USB flash drive 20.02.2024

Interrupt Labs from the UK has introduced a new technological development called Overdrive USB, which will be of interest to those who pay great attention to data security.

Overdrive USB is a USB flash drive without built-in hardware encryption, making it legal for use in countries where such features may be prohibited. Despite this, the device has several unique features that distinguish it from other analogues on the market.

First, to access the data on the flash drive, you need to insert it into the slot three times. Otherwise, the computer will recognize the device as damaged.

In addition, Overdrive USB has a self-destruct function. It is capable of increasing the voltage on the main chip, causing a sharp increase in temperature to 100 °C and above. However, this is not enough to completely destroy information. Users will have to use a flammable substance for this function.

The device is available to pre-order on crowdfunding platform Crowd Supply for just $69. Deliveries are scheduled for August 2024.

Overdrive USB is an industry-leading solution for secure data storage, providing unique access and security mechanisms that make it an attractive choice for users who value privacy and security of their information.
