Power supplies are usually assembled according to the classical scheme: AC voltage rectifier, filter capacitor, stabilizer. However, in some cases, you can do without a filter, which is often the most cumbersome part of the power source. It is known that a capacitor included in an alternating current circuit shifts its phase by 90 degrees. Such a phase-shifting capacitor is used, for example, when connecting a three-phase motor to a single-phase network.

The capacitive filter smoothes the output voltage ripple of single-phase rectifiers, creating an acceptable value of its constant component, and the larger the capacitance of the filter capacitors, the less the ripple and, accordingly, the greater the constant component.

In three-phase rectifiers, due to the mutual overlap of voltage half-waves, the constant component is larger, which in many cases makes it possible to do without a capacitive filter.

If a phase-shifting capacitor is used in a single-phase rectifier, which provides mutual overlapping of the half-waves of the rectified voltage, in many cases, at a constant load, a bulky capacitive filter can be dispensed with or its capacitance can be significantly reduced. A diagram of such a stabilized rectifier is shown in fig. 6.9.

Low ripple rectifier

A three-phase rectifier VD1...VD6 is connected to an AC voltage source through active (resistor R1) and capacitive (capacitor C1) resistance.

The output voltage of the rectifier stabilizes the Zener diode VD7. The capacitor (or several capacitors connected in parallel to obtain the required capacitance) must be rated for operation in AC circuits.

The described rectifier can be used where it is necessary to reduce the dimensions of the electronic device, since the dimensions of the oxide capacitors of the capacitive filter are usually larger than the phase-shifting capacitor of a relatively small capacity.

The gain in dimensions is especially noticeable in mains rectifiers, when the mains voltage is directly rectified without the use of a step-down transformer. Another advantage of the proposed option is that the consumed current is practically constant (in the case of a constant load), while in rectifiers with a capacitive filter at the moment of switching on, the starting current significantly exceeds the steady-state value (due to the charge of the filter capacitors), which in some cases is highly undesirable .

The described device can also be used with series voltage stabilizers with a constant load, as well as with a load that does not require voltage stabilization.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Smart contact lens that moisturizes the eye 26.01.2020

For people with vision problems, the choice is always made only between glasses and lenses. Glasses are visible, which often suffers from aesthetics, the lenses are hidden, but harm the eyes. Wearing any contact materials on the pupils sooner or later causes "dry eye syndrome", blinking frequency decreases, moisture evaporation increases. As a result, corneal wounds, inflammation and discomfort can occur.

Led by Professor Matsuhiko Nishizawa, a team from Japan's Tohoku University set out to develop a lens that solves this problem. The prototype device maintains a layer of tear fluid between itself and the eye using a phenomenon known as "electroosmotic flow". A current is applied to the natural tear reservoir under the lower eyelid, and contact with the hydrogel from which the lens is made occurs. This gentle, unobtrusive process draws fluid out of the tear ducts, prompting them to work. As a result, the eye is moisturized.

So far, scientists have successfully powered the lens using built-in magnesium-oxygen and enzymatic fructose-oxygen "biobatteries". Now they are exploring the possibility of wireless powering a future version of the device. New smart lenses will be charged remotely in the same way as gadgets from docking stations.

"This is the first demonstration of how the electroosmotic flow process in a soft contact lens can keep the lens moist," says Nishizawa. "In the future, there are opportunities to expand this technology to other applications such as drug delivery."
