When repairing and designing radio and electrical equipment, it sometimes becomes necessary to manufacture insulating washers or round gaskets from getinax, textolite, plexiglass and other types of plastic. Similar products can be made quite quickly using a spade drill for wood (Fig. 1).

Production of insulating washers

A set of cutting inserts will allow you to make a wide range of washers. If you are not satisfied with their inner diameter, it can be drilled to the required size. When working with plastic, it should be remembered that its melting varieties must be processed at low speeds.

Using a cutting stone or "vulcanite", you can make cutting inserts yourself from old hacksaw blades, kitchen knives, etc., as well as a special insert (Fig. 2), which, paired with a regular one, will allow you to make it in two passes (on both sides plastic sheet) a very scarce washer with two outer diameters. Most often, such a washer is used to isolate transistor heatsinks from the chassis. Usually it is made from two different washers, but this method is not suitable for mass production of identical products.

Initially, the technology for manufacturing plastic washers using spade drills was developed for the manufacture of bearing washers for the rotors of washing machines, but it has proven itself to be very fast and high-quality, therefore it can be recommended to a wide range of amateurs.

Small insects do not try to mimic perfectly 07.04.2012

Studying the ability of many living organisms - mostly insects - to mimicry, giving them a deterrent of predators or simply a "tasteless" look, even Charles Darwin drew attention to the paradox. Many species, he observed, pretend to be different casually, so that the difference between the copy and the original can be seen at once. In theory, such bad pretense should be evolutionarily doomed, predators will expose the substitution and eat them, but for some reason evolution forgives them for such negligence, and they do not disappear for many millions of years.

A study by Canadian biologists at Carleton University in Ottawa explained why they get away with bad copying. As you might expect, what the human eye recognizes may well deceive the eye of a predator, because its senses are different from ours. But there are subtleties here.

Scientists studied 81 species of hover flies, which have the habit of both the look and the sound made during the flight to imitate a wasp. Some of them are very similar to wasps, some are only approximately. After inviting volunteers, the researchers asked them to rate each photo on a scale of XNUMX to XNUMX. They then examined the resulting ten groups.
It turned out that large species of hoverflies perfectly or almost perfectly imitate wasps, while small ones clearly do not try. This also applies to the type and quality of the "wasp" buzz.

Scientists explain it this way. “A small hoverfly doesn’t need a complete resemblance,” says Professor Thomas Sherratt, who led the study. “Birds will not show interest in her, because for them she is already unattractive, in fact, a baby, no more. the risk of being stung by a wasp outweighs for them the already small benefit of such a meal.However, the fly is fat and "beautiful", its appearance excites the bird's appetite, in which case only a very good resemblance to a wasp or a bee will save it, because special attention to it from the side of the predator is guaranteed.
